Jeremiah Shares Israēl’s Affliction

ALEPH.

1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

1 I am the man who sees poverty, through the rod of his wrath on me. 1 I am the man who sees poverty, through the rod of his wrath on me.

2 He has led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

2 He has taken me, and led me away into darkness, and not into light. 2 He has taken me, and led me away into darkness, and not into light.

3 Surely against me is he turned; he turns his hand against me all the day.

3 Nay, against me has he turned his hand all the day. 3 Nay, against me has he turned his hand all the day.
ΒΗΘ. BETH.

4 My flesh and my skin has he made old; he has broken my bones.

4 He has made old my flesh and my skin; he has broken my bones. 4 He has made old my flesh and my skin; he has broken my bones.

5 He has built against me, and surrounded me with gall and travail.

5 He has built against me, and surrounded my head, and brought travail on me. 5 He has built against me, and surrounded my head, and brought travail on me.

6 He has set me in dark places, as they who be dead of old.

6 He has set me in dark places, as those who have long been dead. 6 He has set me in dark places, as those who have long been dead.
GIMEL.

7 He has hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he has made my chain heavy.

7 He has built against me, and I cannot come forth: he has made my copper-alloy chain heavy. 7 He has built against me, and I cannot come forth: he has made my copper-alloy chain heavy.

8 Also when I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer.

8 Yea, though I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer. 8 Yea, though I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer.

9 He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone, he has made my paths crooked.

9 He has built up my ways, he has hedged my paths; 9 He has built up my ways, he has hedged my paths;
DALETH.

10 He was to me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

10 he has troubled me, as a she-bear lying in wait: he is to me as a lion in secret places. 10 he has troubled me, as a she-bear lying in wait: he is to me as a lion in secret places.

11 He has turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he has made me desolate.

11 He pursued me after I departed, and brought me to a stand: he has utterly ruined me. 11 He pursued me after I departed, and brought me to a stand: he has utterly ruined me.

12 He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

12 He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. 12 He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
Η. HE.

13 He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my insides.

13 He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my insides. 13 He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my insides.

14 I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.

14 I became a laughing-stock to all my people; and their song all the day. 14 I became a laughing-stock to all my people; and their song all the day.

15 He has filled me with bitterness, he has made me drunken with wormwood.

15 He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me with gall. 15 He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me with gall.
VAU.

16 He has also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he has covered me with ashes.

16 And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes. 16 And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes.

17 And you have removed my soul far off from peace: I forgot prosperity.

17 He has also removed my soul from peace: I forgot prosperity. 17 He has also removed my soul from peace: I forgot prosperity.

18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from Yahweh.

18 Therefore my success has perished, and my hope from the Lord. 18 Therefore my success has perished, and my hope from the Lord.

Hope of Relief in God’s Mercy

ZAIN.

19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

19 I remembered by reason of my poverty, and because of persecution my bitterness and gall shall be remembered; 19 I remembered by reason of my poverty, and because of persecution my bitterness and gall shall be remembered;

20 My soul has them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

20 and my soul shall meditate with me. 20 and my soul shall meditate with me.

21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.

21 This will I lay up in my heart, therefore I will endure. 21 This will I lay up in my heart, therefore I will endure.
ΗΘ. HETH.

22 It is of Yahweh’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his mercies fail not.

22 N/A 22 It is the mercies of the Lord, that he hasn’t failed me, because his mercies are not exhausted. Pity us, Oh Lord, early every month; for we are not brought to an end, because his mercies are not exhausted.

23 They are new every morning: great is your faithfullness.

23 N/A
23 They are new in the morning, your faithfullness is great

24 Yahweh is my portion, says my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

24 N/A
24 The Lord is my portion says my soul; therefore I will wait for Him.
ΤΗΘ. TETH.

25 Yahweh is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.

25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him: the soul which shall seek him 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him: the soul which shall seek him

26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Yahweh.

26 is good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation of the Lord. 26 is good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation of the Lord.

27 It is good for a man who he bear the yoke in his youth.

27 It is good for a man when he bears a yoke in his youth. 27 It is good for a man when he bears a yoke in his youth.
ΙΩΔ. JOD.

28 He sits alone and keeps silence, because he has borne it on him.

28 He will sit alone, and be silent, because he has borne it on him. 28 He will sit alone, and be silent, because he has borne it on him.

29 He puts his mouth in the dust; perhaps there may be hope.

29 N/A 29 N/A
29 N/A 29 N/A

30 He gives his cheek to him who smites him: he is filled full with reproach.

30 He will give his cheek to him who smites him: he will be filled full with reproaches. 30 He will give his cheek to him who smites him: he will be filled full with reproaches.
ΧΑΦ. CHAPH.

31 For the Lord won’t cast off forever.

31 For the Lord won’t reject forever. 31 For the Lord won’t reject forever.

32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have mercy according to the multitude of his mercies.

32 For he that has brought down will pity, and that according to the abundance of his mercy. 32 For he that has brought down will pity, and that according to the abundance of his mercy.

33 For he doesn’t afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

33 He hasn’t answered in anger from his heart, though he has brought low the children of a man. 33 He hasn’t answered in anger from his heart, though he has brought low the children of a man.
LAMED.

34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,

34 To bring down under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, 34 To bring down under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,

35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,

35 to turn aside the judgment of a man before the face of the Most High, 35 to turn aside the judgment of a man before the face of the Most High,

36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approves not.

36 to condemn a man unjustly in his judgment, the Lord hasn’t given commandment. 36 to condemn a man unjustly in his judgment, the Lord hasn’t given commandment.
ΜΗΜ. MEM.

37 Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord commands it not?

37 Τίς οὕτως εἶπεν, καὶ ἐγενήθη;
37 Τίς οὕτως εἶπε, καὶ ἐγενήθη;
37 Who has thus spoken, and it has come to pass? The Lord hasn’t commanded it. 37 Who has thus spoken, and it has come to pass? The Lord hasn’t commanded it.

38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceeds not evil and good?

38 ἐκ στόματος ὑψίστου οὐκ ἐξελεύσεται τὰ κακὰ καὶ τὸ ἀγαθόν;
38 ἐκ στόματος Ὑψίστου οὐκ ἐξελεύσεται τὰ κακὰ καὶ τὸ ἀγαθόν;
38 Out of the mouth of the Most High there shall not come forth evil and good. 38 Out of the mouth of the Most High there shall not come forth evil and good.

39 Why does a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

39 τί γογγύσει ἄνθρωπος ζῶν, ἀνὴρ περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας αὐτοῦ;
39 τί γογγύσει ἄνθρωπος ζῶν, ἀνὴρ περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας αὐτοῦ;
39 Why should a living man complain, a man concerning his sin? 39 Why should a living man complain, a man concerning his sin?
NUN.

40 Let’s search and try our ways, and turn again to Yahweh.

40 Our way has been searched out and examined, and we will turn to the Lord. 40 Our way has been searched out and examined, and we will turn to the Lord.

41 Let’s lift up our heart with our hands to God in the heavens.

41 Let’s lift up our hearts with our hand to the lofty One in heaven. 41 Let’s lift up our hearts with our hand to the lofty One in heaven.

42 We have transgressed and have rebelled: you haven’t pardoned.

42 We have sinned, we have transgressed; and you have not pardoned. 42 We have sinned, we have transgressed; and you have not pardoned.
SAMECH.

43 You have covered with anger, and persecuted us: you have slain, you haven’t pitied.

43 You has visited us in wrath, and driven us away: you has slain, you haven’t pitied. 43 You has visited us in wrath, and driven us away: you has slain, you haven’t pitied.

44 You have covered yourself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.

44 You have veiled thyself with a cloud because of prayer, that I might be blind, 44 You have veiled thyself with a cloud because of prayer, that I might be blind,

45 You have made us as the off-scouring and refuse in the midst of the people.

45 and be cast off. You have set us alone in the midst of the nations. 45 and be cast off. You have set us alone in the midst of the nations.
ΦΗ. PHE.

46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.

46 All our enemies have opened their mouth against us. 46 All our enemies have opened their mouth against us.

47 Fear and a snare is come on us, desolation and destruction.

47 Fear and wrath are come on us, suspense and destruction. 47 Fear and wrath are come on us, suspense and destruction.

48 My eye runs down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

48 My eye shall pour down torrents of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. 48 My eye shall pour down torrents of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
ΑΙΝ. AIN.

49 My eye trickles down, and ceases not, without any intermission,

49 P My eye is drowned with tears, and I won’t be silent, so that there shall be no rest, 49 P My eye is drowned with tears, and I won’t be silent, so that there shall be no rest,

50 Till Yahweh look down, and behold from heaven.

50 until the Lord look down, and behold from heaven. 50 until the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.

51 My eye affects my heart because of all the daughters of my city.

51 My eye shall prey on my soul, because of all the daughters of the city. 51 My eye shall prey on my soul, because of all the daughters of the city.

52 My enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.

52
The fowlers chased me as a sparrow, all mine enemies destroyed my life in a pit without cause,
52
The fowlers chased me as a sparrow, all mine enemies destroyed my life in a pit without cause,

53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone on me.

53 and laid a stone on me. 53 and laid a stone on me.

54 Waters flowed over my head; then I said, I am cut off.

54 Water flowed over my head: I said, I am cut off. 54 Water flowed over my head: I said, I am cut off.
ΚΩΦ. KOPH.

55 I called on your name, Oh Yahweh, out of the low dungeon.

55 I called on thy name, Oh Lord, out of the lowest dungeon. 55 I called on thy name, Oh Lord, out of the lowest dungeon.

56 You have heard my voice: don’t hide your ear at my breathing, at my cry.

56 You heard my voice: close not thine ears to my supplication. 56 You heard my voice: close not thine ears to my supplication.

57 You drew near in the day that I called on you: you said, Fear not.

57 You drew near to my help: in the day wherein I called on you you said to me, Fear not. 57 You drew near to my help: in the day wherein I called on you you said to me, Fear not.
RHECHS.

58 Oh Lord, you have pleaded the causes of my soul; you have redeemed my life.

58 Oh Lord, you has pleaded the causes of my soul; you has redeemed my life. 58 Oh Lord, you has pleaded the causes of my soul; you has redeemed my life.

59 Oh Yahweh, you have seen my wrong: judge you my cause.

59 You have seen, Oh Lord, my troubles: you have judged my cause. 59 You have seen, Oh Lord, my troubles: you have judged my cause.

60 You have seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.

60 You have seen all their vengeance, you have looked on all their devices against me. 60 You have seen all their vengeance, you have looked on all their devices against me.
CHSEN.

61 You have heard their reproach, Oh Yahweh, and all their imaginations against me;

61 You have heard their reproach and all their devices against me; 61 You have heard their reproach and all their devices against me;

62 The lips of those who rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

62 the lips of those who rose up against me, and their plots against me all the day; 62 the lips of those who rose up against me, and their plots against me all the day;
