1. ἐλπίδα οὐκ ἔχομεν ὅτι οὐ γινώσκομεν τὸν κύριον.
We do not have hope because we do not know the Lord.
2. τῇ χάριτι αὐτοῦ ὁ θεὸς ἔσωσεν ἁμαρτωλούς.
By his grace God saved sinners.
3. ὁ λόγος μου μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
My word abides/remains forever (literally, into the age).
4. ὁ ἀπόστολος οὐκέτι γινώσκει τὸν κύριον κατὰ τὴν σάρκα.
The apostle no longer knows the Lord according to the flesh.
5. ὁ πονηρὸς μαθητὴς ἐξῆλθε καὶ ἦν νύξ.
The evil disciple went out, and it was night. (cf. John 13:30)
6. ἄρχων ἦλθε πρὸς τὸν χριστὸν καὶ ἐδιδάχθη τὴν ὁδὸν τῆς ζωῆς.
A ruler came to the Christ and was taught the way of life.
7. λέγομεν ὅτι ἔχομεν κοινωνίαν μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
We say that we have fellowship with him.
8. αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἀγγελία τῆς ἀληθείας· ὁ θεός ἐστιν ἀγαθὸς καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ μένουσιν ἐν αὐτῷ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
This is the message of truth: God is good, and the sons abide in him forever and ever (literally, into the ages of the ages).
9. ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος. οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν θεόν. πάντα δι’ αὐτοῦ γένετο.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This one was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him. (John 1:1–3)
10. ὁ κύριος διδάσκει ὅτι ὁ θεός ἐστιν ὁ πατὴρ ἀγαθῶν ἀνθρώπων.
The Lord teaches that God is the Father of good men.
11. ὁ υἱὸς καὶ ἡ θυγάτηρ λαμβάνουσι καλὰ δῶρα ἀπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῶν.
The son and the daughter receive good gifts from their mother.
12. ἀγάπη καὶ ἐλπὶς μένουσι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
Love and hope remain forever.
