Chapter 23
Death of Sarah
1 And the life of Sarah was one hundred and twenty-seven years.[1] 2 And Sarah died in the city of Arbok, which is in the valley (this is Hebron) in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep. 3 And Abraham rose up from his dead and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, 4 "I am a sojourner and a foreigner among you; give me therefore a possession of a burial place among you, and I will bury my dead away from me."
[1]Sarah died about 2029 BC at the age of 127 which makes Isaac about 37 at this time.
5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, 6 "Not so, lord; rather hear us. You are a king from God among us; bury your dead in our choice monuments; for no one of us will withhold his monument from you for burying your dead there." 7 And Abraham rose and bowed down to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth, 8 and Abraham spoke to them, saying, "If you have it in your soul that I should bury my dead from before my face, hear me and speak on my behalf to Ephron the son of Saar, 9 and let him give to me the double cave (Machpelah) which belongs to him, which is at the edge of his field; for the full price of silver let him give it to me among you for a possession of a monument."
10 Now Ephron was sitting in the midst of the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham and said, in the hearing of the sons of Heth and of all those entering the city, saying, 11 "Be with me, lord, and hear me. The field and the cave that is in it I give to you; in the presence of all my citizens I have given it to you; bury your dead." 12 And Abraham bowed down before the people of the land, 13 and he spoke to Ephron in the ears of the people of the land, "Since you are for me, hear me; take the silver for the field from me, and I will bury my dead there."
14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15 "No, lord, I have heard. A piece of land worth four hundred didrachmas of silver—between me and you, what is that? But you, bury your dead." 16 And Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham paid to Ephron the silver which he had spoken in the ears of the sons of Heth: four hundred didrachmas of silver, approved by merchants.
17 And the field of Ephron, which was in the double cave, which is before the face of Mambre—the field and the cave which was in it, and every tree which was in the field, which is within its borders round about—was made sure 18 to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth and of all those entering the city. 19 After these things, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the double cave of the field, which is opposite Mambre (this is Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 And the field and the cave which was in it were confirmed to Abraham as a possession of a burial place by the sons of Heth.
