Chapter 24
Bride for Isaac
2 And Abraham said to his servant, the eldest of his house, the ruler of all his possessions, "Put your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will adjure you by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son Isaac from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; 4 but you shall go to my country, where I was born, and to my tribe, and you shall take a wife for my son Isaac from there."
5 And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me back to this land; shall I return your son to the land from which you came out?" 6 And Abraham said to him, "Take heed to yourself, that you do not return my son there. 7 The Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'To you I will give this land and to your seed,' He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son Isaac from there. 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you to this land, you shall be clear of this oath; only do not return my son there." 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his lord and swore to him concerning this matter.
12 And he said, "O Lord, God of my lord Abraham, prosper me this day and show mercy to my lord Abraham. 13 Behold, I stand by the spring of water, and the daughters of the inhabitants of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 And let it be that the virgin to whom I shall say, 'Lean down your jar that I may drink,' and she shall say, 'Drink, and I will water your camels also until they have finished drinking'—this is the one You have prepared for Your servant Isaac; and by this I shall know that You have shown mercy to my lord Abraham."
Rebekah is Chosen
21  δὲ ἄνθρωπος κατεμάνθανεν αὐτὴν καὶ παρεσιώπα τοῦ γνῶναι εἰ εὐόδωκεν κύριος τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ οὔ. 15 And it happened before he had finished speaking in his mind, behold, Rebecca came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Melcha, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, having her jar on her shoulders. 16 And the virgin was very beautiful in appearance; she was a virgin, no man had known her. Having gone down to the spring, she filled her jar and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her and said, "Give me a little water to drink from your jar." 18 And she said, "Drink, lord." And she hurried and lowered the jar upon her arm and gave him a drink 19 until he finished drinking. And she said, "I will draw water for your camels too, until they have all drunk." 20 And she hurried and emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw, and she drew for all the camels. 21 And the man was observing her and kept silent to know whether the Lord had prospered his way or not.
22 And it happened when all the camels had finished drinking, the man took golden earrings of a drachma in weight and two bracelets for her hands, ten gold pieces in their weight. 23 And he asked her and said, "Whose daughter are you? Tell me; is there a place for us to lodge at your father's house?" 24 And she said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, son of Melcha, whom she bore to Nahor." 25 And she said to him, "There is both straw and much fodder with us, and a place to lodge." 26 And the man, being well-pleased, worshipped the Lord 27 and said, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, who has not forsaken His righteousness and His truth from my lord; the Lord has prospered my way to the house of my lord’s brother." 28 And the girl ran and reported these things to her mother’s house.
29 Now Rebecca had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran out to the man at the spring. 30 And it happened when he saw the earrings and the bracelets on his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebecca his sister saying, "Thus the man spoke to me," he went to the man, and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 And he said to him, "Come in, blessed of the Lord; why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels." 32 And the man entered the house and unloaded the camels. And he gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 And he set bread before them to eat. But he said, "I will not eat until I have spoken my words." And they said, "Speak." 34 And he said, "I am Abraham's servant."
35 "And the Lord has blessed my lord greatly, and he has been exalted; and He has given him sheep and calves, silver and gold, male and female servants, camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah, my lord's wife, bore one son to my lord after he had grown old, and he has given to him all that he had. 37 And my lord made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I sojourn; 38 but you shall go to the house of my father and to my tribe, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.'
39 And I said to my lord, 'Perhaps the woman will not go with me.' 40 And he said to me, 'The Lord, before whom I have been well-pleasing, will Himself send His angel with you and will prosper your way, and you shall take a wife for my son from my tribe and from the house of my father. 41 Then you shall be innocent of my curse; for whenever you come to my tribe and they do not give her to you, you shall be innocent of my oath.'
42 And having come today to the spring, I said, 'O Lord, God of my lord Abraham, if You are prospering my way in which I am now traveling, 43 behold, I have stood by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city shall come out to draw water, and let it be that the virgin to whom I shall say, "Give me a little water to drink from your jar," 44 and she shall say to me, "You drink, and I will draw water for your camels also"—this is the woman whom the Lord has prepared for His own servant Isaac; and by this I shall know that You have shown mercy to my lord Abraham.'
45 And it happened before I had finished speaking in my mind, immediately Rebecca came out having the jar on her shoulders, and she went down to the spring and drew water. And I said to her, 'Give me a drink.' 46 And she hurried and lowered her jar from herself and said, 'You drink, and I will water your camels.' And I drank, and she watered my camels. 47 And I asked her and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Nahor, whom Melcha bore to him.' And I put the earrings on her and the bracelets around her hands. 48 And being well-pleased, I worshipped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, who prospered me in a way of truth to take the daughter of my lord's brother for his son. 49 Now therefore, if you are going to show mercy and justice toward my lord, tell me; but if not, tell me, so that I may turn to the right or to the left.'"
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, "This matter has come from the Lord; we cannot therefore speak to you evil or good. 51 Behold, Rebecca is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your lord's son, just as the Lord has spoken." 52 And it happened when Abraham’s servant heard these words, he worshipped the Lord upon the earth. 53 And the servant brought out silver and gold vessels and clothing and gave them to Rebecca, and he gave gifts to her brother and to her mother. 54 And they ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and they slept. And having risen in the morning, he said, "Send me away, that I may go to my lord." 55 But her brothers and her mother said, "Let the virgin stay with us about ten days, and after that she shall depart." 56 But he said to them, "Do not hinder me, since the Lord has prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my lord." 57 And they said, "Let us call the girl and ask her mouth (her opinion)." 58 And they called Rebecca and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" And she said, "I will go." 59 And they sent away Rebecca their sister and her belongings and Abraham’s servant and those with him. 60 And they blessed Rebecca their sister and said to her, "Our sister you are; may you become thousands of myriads, and may your seed inherit the cities of their adversaries." 61 And Rebecca and her maids arose and mounted the camels and went with the man; and the servant took Rebecca and departed.
Isaac Marries Rebekah
62 Now Isaac was traveling through the wilderness by the Well of the Vision (Beer-lahai-roi); for he dwelt in the land toward the south. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening, and looking up with his eyes, he saw camels coming. 64 And Rebecca, looking up with her eyes, saw Isaac and leaped down from the camel 65 and said to the servant, "Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?" And the servant said, "This is my lord." And she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant related to Isaac all the things he had done. 67 And Isaac entered into his mother’s house and took Rebecca, and she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted concerning Sarah his mother.
