Chapter 9

9:3 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς, οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἀλλ' ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ. 3 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς, οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ· ἀλλ' ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ.

9:6 ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος καὶ ἐπέχρισεν αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς 6 ταῦτα εἰπών, ἔπτυσε χαμαί, καὶ ἐποίησε πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος, καὶ ἐπέχρισε τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ,

9:7 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωὰμ (ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται ἀπεσταλμένος). ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων. 7 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ, ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται, ἀπεσταλμένος.

Then the neighbours, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?” Then the neighbours, and those who previously saw him that he was blind, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?”
9:9 ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν, ἄλλοι ἔλεγον, οὐχί, ἀλλὰ ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν.

9:11 ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος, ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ εἶπέν μοι ὅτι ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν Σιλωὰμ καὶ νίψαι· ἀπελθὼν οὖν καὶ νιψάμενος ἀνέβλεψα. 11 ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν, ἄνθρωπος λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησε, καὶ ἐπέχρισέ μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, καὶ εἶπέ μοι, ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ, καὶ νίψαι.

9:12 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος;

λέγει, οὐκ οἶδα.
They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don't know.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don't know.”
9:13 Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους τὸν ποτε τυφλόν. 13 Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους, τόν ποτε τυφλόν.

9:15 πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέν μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς, καὶ ἐνιψάμην καὶ βλέπω. 		15 πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, πηλὸν ἐπέθηκεν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου, καὶ ἐνιψάμην, καὶ βλέπω.

Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because he doesn't keep the sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And there was a division among them. 9:17 λέγουσιν οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν, τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἠνέῳξεν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι προφήτης ἐστίν. 		17 λέγουσι τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν, σὺ τί λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἤνοιξέ σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, ὅτι προφήτης ἐστίν.
Then they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.” They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
9:18 οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος 18 οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι τυφλὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν, ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος,

πῶς οὖν βλέπει ἄρτι; 		19 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη;
πῶς οὖν ἄρτι βλέπει;

9:21 πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει οὐκ οἴδαμεν, ἢ τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν· αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε, ἡλικίαν ἔχει, αὐτὸς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λαλήσει. 21 πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει, οὐκ οἴδαμεν· ἢ τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν· αὐτὸς ἡλικίαν ἔχει· αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε, αὐτὸς περὶ αὐτοῦ λαλήσει.

9:22 ταῦτα εἶπαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους· ἤδη γὰρ συνετέθειντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα ἐάν τις αὐτὸν ὁμολογήσῃ Χριστόν, ἀποσυνάγωγος γένηται. 22 ταῦτα εἶπον οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους· ἤδη γὰρ συνετέθειντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, ἵνα ἐάν τις αὐτὸν ὁμολογήσῃ Χριστόν, ἀποσυνάγωγος γένηται.
His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue. 9:23 διὰ τοῦτο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπαν ὅτι ἡλικίαν ἔχει, αὐτὸν ἐπερωτήσατε, 23 διὰ τοῦτο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπον, ὅτι ἡλικίαν ἔχει, αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε.

9:24 Ἐφώνησαν οὖν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ δευτέρου ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, δὸς δόξαν τῷ θεῷ· ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν. 24 Ἐφώνησαν οὖν ἐκ δευτέρου τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὃς ἦν τυφλός, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, δὸς δόξαν τῷ θεῷ· ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν.

9:26 εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ, τί ἐποίησέν σοι;

πῶς ἤνοιξέ σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
Then they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” Then they said to him again, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
9:27 ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς, εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε· τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν;
μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι; 		27 ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς, εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη, καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε· τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν;
μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι;
And he answered them, “I told you already and you didn't listen; why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples too, do you?” Then he answered them, “I told you already and you didn't listen; why do you want to hear it again? 9:28 καὶ ἐλοιδόρησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπον, σὺ μαθητὴς εἶ ἐκείνου, ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί· 28 ἐλοιδόρησαν οὖν αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπον, σὺ εἶ μαθητὴς ἐκείνου· ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί.

9:30 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ τὸ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν, ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν, καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς. 30 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν, ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστί, καὶ ἀνέῳξε μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.

9:31 οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἁμαρτωλῶν ὁ θεὸς οὐκ ἀκούει, ἀλλ' ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς ᾖ καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ τούτου ἀκούει. 31 οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι ἁμαρτωλῶν ὁ θεὸς οὐκ ἀκούει· ἀλλ' ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς ᾖ, καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ, τούτου ἀκούει.
We know that God doesn't hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he hears him. We know that God doesn't hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he hears him.
9:32 ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ ἠκούσθη ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν τις ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ γεγεννημένου· 32 ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ ἠκούσθη, ὅτι ἤνοιξε τις ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ γεγεννημένου.

9:34 ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω. 34 ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος, καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς;
καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω.

9:35 Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν εἶπεν, σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; 35 Ἤκουσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω· καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτόν, εἶπεν αὐτῷ, σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ;

9:36 ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν, καὶ τίς ἐστιν, κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν; 36 ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπε, τίς ἐστι, κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν;
He answered and said, “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him?” He answered and said, “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him?”
9:37 εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν. 37 εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτόν, καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ, ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν.

9:38 ὁ δὲ ἔφη, πιστεύω, κύριε· καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ. 38 ὁ δὲ ἔφη, πιστεύω, κύριε· καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ.
And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshipped him. And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshipped him.
9:39 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον, ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσιν καὶ οἱ βλέποντες τυφλοὶ γένωνται. 39 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον, ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσι, καὶ οἱ βλέποντες τυφλοὶ γένωνται.

9:40 ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ μετ' αὐτοῦ ὄντες καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν; 40 καὶ ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ ὄντες μετ' αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν;
Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, “We are not blind also, are we?” Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, “We are not blind also, are we?”
9:41 εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε, οὐκ ἄν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν· νῦν δὲ λέγετε ὅτι βλέπομεν, ἡ ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει. 41 εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε, οὐκ ἄν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν· νῦν δὲ λέγετε, ὅτι βλέπομεν· ἡ οὖν ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει.
