Chapter 7
The Flood
| 1 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Νῶε, εἴσελθε σὺ καὶ πᾶς ὁ οἶκός σου εἰς τὴν κιβωτόν, ὅτι σὲ εἶδον δίκαιον ἐναντίον μου ἐν τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ. 2 ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν κτηνῶν τῶν καθαρῶν εἰσάγαγε πρὸς σὲ ἑπτὰ ἑπτά ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ, ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν κτηνῶν τῶν μὴ καθαρῶν δύο δύο ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ. 3 καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν πετεινῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τῶν καθαρῶν ἑπτὰ ἑπτά ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν πετεινῶν τῶν μὴ καθαρῶν δύο δύο ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ, διαθρέψαι σπέρμα ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν. 4 ἔτι γὰρ ἡμερῶν ἑπτὰ ἐγὼ ἐπάγω ὑετὸν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, τεσσαράκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ τεσσαράκοντα νύκτας· καὶ ἐξαλείψω πᾶσαν τὴν ἐξανάστασιν, ἣν ἐποίησα ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς. 5 καὶ ἐποίησεν Νῶε πάντα, ὅσα ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ κύριος ὁ θεός. | 1 And the Lord God said to Noah, "Enter, you and all your household, into the ark; for I have seen you to be righteous before me in this generation. 2 And from the clean cattle bring in to you seven and seven, male and female; and from the cattle that are not clean, two and two, male and female. 3 And from the clean birds of heaven seven and seven, male and female; and from the birds that are not clean, two and two, male and female, to nourish seed upon all the earth. 4 For in yet seven days I am bringing rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out every living thing that I made from the face of the earth." 5 And Noah did all things as many as the Lord God commanded him. |
| 6 Νῶε δὲ ἦν ἐτῶν ἑξακοσίων, καὶ ὁ κατακλυσμὸς ἐγένετο ὕδατος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. 7 εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Νῶε καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ μετ' αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν κιβωτόν, διὰ τὸ ὕδωρ τοῦ κατακλυσμοῦ. 8 καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν πετεινῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν κτηνῶν τῶν καθαρῶν, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν κτηνῶν τῶν μὴ καθαρῶν, καὶ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἑρπετῶν τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, 9 δύο δύο εἰσῆλθον πρὸς Νῶε εἰς τὴν κιβωτόν ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ, καθὰ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ ὁ θεός. 10 καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὰς ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας, καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ τοῦ κατακλυσμοῦ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. | 6 And Noah was six hundred years old[1] when the flood of water came upon the earth. 7 And Noah entered, and his sons, and his wife, and the wives of his sons with him into the ark, because of the water of the flood. 8 And from the birds and from the clean cattle, and from the cattle that are not clean, and from all the creeping things upon the earth, 9 two and two they entered to Noah into the ark, male and female, as God had commanded him. 10 And it happened after the seven days that the water of the flood came upon the earth. |
[1]As mentioned in Chapter 5, the LXX chronology places Noah's 600th year significantly earlier in human history than the Hebrew text does, which affects the entire timeline of the ancient world as understood by early Greek-speaking Christians.
| 11 ἐν τῷ ἑξακοσιοστῷ ἔτει ἐν τῇ ζωῇ τοῦ Νῶε, τοῦ δευτέρου μηνός, ἑβδόμῃ καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ μηνός, τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ ἐρράγησαν πᾶσαι αἱ πηγαὶ τῆς ἀβύσσου, καὶ οἱ καταρράκται τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἠνεῴχθησαν. 12 καὶ ἐγένετο ὁ ὑετὸς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τεσσαράκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ τεσσαράκοντα νύκτας. 13 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ εἰσῆλθεν Νῶε, Σήμ, Χάμ, Ἰάφεθ, υἱοὶ Νῶε, καὶ ἡ γυνὴ Νῶε, καὶ αἱ τρεῖς γυναῖκες τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ, μετ' αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν κιβωτόν. 14 καὶ πάντα τὰ θηρία κατὰ γένος, καὶ πάντα τὰ κτήνη κατὰ γένος καὶ πᾶν ἑρπετὸν κινούμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς κατὰ γένος, καὶ πᾶν πετεινὸν κατὰ γένος, 15 εἰσῆλθον πρὸς Νῶε εἰς τὴν κιβωτόν, δύο δύο ἀπὸ πάσης σαρκός, ἐν ᾧ ἐστιν πνεῦμα ζωῆς. 16 καὶ τὰ εἰσπορευόμενα ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἀπὸ πάσης σαρκὸς εἰσῆλθεν, καθὰ ἐνετείλατο ὁ θεὸς τῷ Νῶε· καὶ ἔκλεισεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἔξωθεν αὐτοῦ τὴν κιβωτόν. | 11 In the six hundredth year in the life of Noah, in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month,[1] on this day all the fountains of the abyss[1] were burst open, and the floodgates[3] of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain happened upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. 13 On this very day Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth—the sons of Noah—and the wife of Noah, and the three wives of his sons with him, entered into the ark. 14 And all the wild animals according to kind, and all the cattle according to kind, and every creeping thing moving upon the earth according to kind, and every bird according to kind, 15 entered to Noah into the ark, two and two from all flesh in which is the spirit of life. 16 And those entering, male and female from all flesh, entered as God had commanded Noah; and the Lord God shut the ark from the outside of him. |
[1]The LXX specifies the 27th day of the second month. Interestingly, the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) says the 17th day. This ten-day discrepancy is a classic example of the variations between the two traditions, often linked to different lunar-solar calendar adjustments used by the translators in Alexandria.
[2]The term ἀβύσσου (abyssou) denotes an unfathomable depth. In the LXX, this usually refers to the primordial depths of the ocean from Genesis 1:2, suggesting the flood was a "reversal" of creation—where the boundaries between the waters above and below were dissolved.
[3]The Greek uses καταρράκται (katarraktai). In Greek literature, this refers to waterfalls or sluice gates. It paints a picture of the sky having literal doors that were flung open, reflecting the ancient "three-tier" cosmology where water existed above the firmament.

| 17 καὶ ἐγένετο ὁ κατακλυσμὸς τεσσαράκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ τεσσαράκοντα νύκτας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἐπληθύνθη τὸ ὕδωρ· καὶ ἐπῆρεν τὴν κιβωτόν, καὶ ὑψώθη ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς. 18 καὶ ἐπεκράτει τὸ ὕδωρ, καὶ ἐπληθύνετο σφόδρα ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἐπεφέρετο ἡ κιβωτὸς ἐπάνω τοῦ ὕδατος. 19 τὸ δὲ ὕδωρ ἐπεκράτει σφόδρα σφοδρῶς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἐπεκάλυψεν πάντα τὰ ὄρη τὰ ὑψηλά, ἃ ἦν ὑποκάτω τοῦ οὐρανοῦ. 20 δέκα πέντε πήχεις ἐπάνω ὑψώθη τὸ ὕδωρ· καὶ ἐπεκάλυψεν πάντα τὰ ὄρη τὰ ὑψηλά. 21 καὶ ἀπέθανεν πᾶσα σὰρξ κινουμένη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τῶν πετεινῶν, καὶ τῶν κτηνῶν, καὶ τῶν θηρίων· καὶ πᾶν ἑρπετὸν κινούμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ πᾶς ἄνθρωπος. 22 καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἔχει πνοὴν ζωῆς, καὶ πᾶς ὃς ἦν ἐπὶ τῆς ξηρᾶς, ἀπέθανεν. 23 καὶ ἐξήλειψεν πᾶν τὸ ἀνάστημα, ὃ ἦν ἐπὶ προσώπου πάσης τῆς γῆς, ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνους, καὶ ἑρπετῶν, καὶ τῶν πετεινῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· καὶ ἐξηλείφθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς· καὶ κατελείφθη μόνος Νῶε, καὶ οἱ μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ κιβωτῷ. 24 καὶ ὑψώθη τὸ ὕδωρ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἡμέρας ἑκατὸν πεντήκοντα. | 17 And the flood happened for forty days and forty nights upon the earth; and the water increased and lifted up the ark, and it was raised up from the earth. 18 And the water prevailed and increased exceedingly upon the earth; and the ark was borne along upon the water. 19 And the water prevailed very, very exceedingly[1] upon the earth; and it covered all the high mountains which were under heaven. 20 Fifteen cubits[2] upward the water was raised; and it covered all the high mountains. 21 And all flesh moving upon the earth died—of the birds, and of the cattle, and of the wild animals—and every creeping thing moving upon the earth, and every man. 22 And all things as many as have the breath of life, and everyone who was upon the dry land, died. 23 And He blotted out every living thing which was upon the face of all the earth, from man to cattle, and creeping things, and the birds of heaven; and they were blotted out from the earth. And Noah alone was left, and those with him in the ark. 24 And the water was raised up upon the earth for one hundred and fifty days. |
