God Yearns over His People
1 When Israēl was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

11:1 Because Israēl was an infant, and I loved him, and out of Egypt I summoned his children. | 11:1 At dawn they were thrown away; Israēl's king was thrown away; because Israēl was an infant, and I loved him, and out of Egypt I summoned his children. |
2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed to Baals, and burned incense to carved images.

11:2 As I summoned them, so they moved away from my presence; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and offering incense to carvings. | 11:2 As I summoned them, so they moved away from my presence; they kept sacrificing to the Baaleim and offering incense to carvings. |
3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they didn't know that I healed them.
11:3 And I shackled the feet of Ephraim; I took him on my arm; and they didn't know that I had healed them. | 11:3 And I shackled the feet of Ephraim; I took him on my arm; and they didn't know that I had healed them. |
4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love; and I was to them as they who take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid food to them.

11:4 Within the ruin of men, I stretched them out with the chains of my love. And I will be to them like a man striking his cheeks. And I will watch him attentively; I will prevail with him. | 11:4 Within the ruin of men, I stretched them out with the chains of my love. And I will be to them like a man striking his cheeks. 5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
11:5 Ephraim settled in Egypt, and Assour himself was his king, because they didn't want to return. | 11:5 Ephraim settled in Egypt, and Assour himself was his king, because they didn't want to return. |
6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.
11:6 And the sword was weak in his cities and ceased in his hands. And they shall eat from their plots. | 11:6 And the sword was weak in his cities and ceased in his hands. And they shall eat from their plots. |
7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
11:7 And his people are hanging from his dwelling place, and God will be angered at his precious things and will not lift him up. | 11:7 And his people are hanging from his dwelling place, and God will be angered at his precious things and will not lift him up. |
8 How shall I give you up, Ephraim? How shall I deliver you, Israēl? How shall I make you as Admah? How shall I set you as Zeboim? My heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.
11:8

11:8 How am I to treat you, Oh Ephraim? Shall I shield you, Oh Israēl? How am I to treat you? Shall I make you like Adama and like Sebōim? My heart was turned around in them; my sense of regret was confounded. | 11:8 How am I to treat you, Oh Ephraim? Shall I shield you, Oh Israēl? How am I to treat you? Shall I make you like Adama and like Sebōeim? My heart was turned around in them; my sense of regret was confounded. |
9 I won't execute the fierceness of my anger, I won't return to destroy Ephraim; for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of you; and I won't enter into the city.

11:9 I won't do according to the anger of my wrath; I won't abandon Ephraim to be wiped out; because I am God and not a man, holy in your midst, and I will not enter into a city. | 11:9 I won't do according to the anger of my wrath; I won't abandon Ephraim to be wiped out; because I am God and not a man, holy in your midst, and I will not enter into a city. |
10 They shall walk after Yahweh: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

11:10 I will go after the Lord; he will roar like a lion. Because he will roar, even the children of waters shall be amazed. | 11:10 I will go after the Lord; he will roar like a lion. Because he will roar, even the children of waters shall be amazed. |
11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria; and I will place them in their houses, says Yahweh.

12 [M 12:1] Ephraim encircles me about with lies, and the house of Israēl with deceit; but Judah yet rules with God, and is faithful with the saints.
