God Speaks of Nature and Its Beings
1 “Do you know the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? Or can you mark when the hinds do calve?
39:1 “Say if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and if you have marked the calving of the hinds. | 39:1 “Say if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and if you have marked the calving of the hinds. |
2 Can you number the months that they fulfill? Or do you know the time when they bring forth?
39:2 and if you have have numbered the full months of their being with young, and if you have relieved their pangs. | 39:2 and if you have have numbered the full months of their being with young, and if you have relieved their pangs. |
3 They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.

39:3 and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs? | 39:3 and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs? |
4 Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with grain; they go forth, and return not to them.

39:4 Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: their young will go forth, and won't return to them. | 39:4 Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: their young will go forth, and won't return to them. |
5 Who has sent out the wild donkey free? Or who has loosed the bands of the wild donkey?
39:5 And who is he who sent forth the wild donkey free? And who loosed his bands? | 39:5 And who is he who sent forth the wild donkey free? And who loosed his bands? |
6 Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
39:6 whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts. | 39:6 whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts. |
7 He scorns the multitude of the city, neither regards he the crying of the driver.
39:7 He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and doesn't hear the chiding of the tax-gatherer. | 39:7 He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and doesn't hear the chiding of the tax-gatherer. |
8 The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.
39:8 He will survey the mountains as his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing. | 39:8 He will survey the mountains as his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing. |
9 Will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or abide by your crib?
39:9 And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger? | 39:9 And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger? |
10 Can you bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? Or will he harrow the valleys after you?
39:10 And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plough furrows for you in the plain? | 39:10 And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plough furrows for you in the plain? |
11 Will you trust him, because his strength is great? Or will you leave your labour to him?
39:11 And do you trust him, because his strength is great? And will you commit your works to him? | 39:11 And do you trust him, because his strength is great? And will you commit your works to him? |
12 Will you believe him, that he will bring home your seed, and gather it into your barn?
39:12 And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring it in to your threshing floor? | 39:12 And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring it in to your threshing floor? |
13 Gavest you the good wings to the peacocks? Or wings and feathers to the ostrich?
39:13 The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice, | 39:13 The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice, |
14 Which leaves her eggs in the earth, and warms them in dust,
39:14 for the ostrich will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust, | 39:14 for the ostrich will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust, |
15 And forgets that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
39:15 and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them. | 39:15 and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them. |
16 She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
39:16 She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: she labours in vain without fear. | 39:16 She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: she labours in vain without fear. |
17 Because God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has he imparted to her understanding.
39:17 For God has withheld wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding. | 39:17 For God has withheld wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding. |
18 What time she lifts up herself on high, she scorns the horse and his rider.
39:18 In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider. | 39:18 In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider. |
19 Have you given the horse strength? Have you clothed his neck with thunder?
39:19 Have you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror? | 39:19 Have you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror? |
20 Can you make him afraid as a grasshopper? The glory of his nostrils is terrible.
39:20 And have you clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage? | 39:20 And have you clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage? |
21 He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength: he goes on to meet the armed men.
39:21 He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain. | 39:21 He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain. |
22 He mocks at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turns he back from the sword.
39:22 He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword. | 39:22 He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword. |
23 The quiver rattles against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
39:23 The bow and sword resound against him; and his rage will swallow up the ground. | 39:23 The bow and sword resound against him; and his rage will swallow up the ground. |
24 He swallows the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believes he who it is the sound of the trumpet.
39:24 and he won't believe until the trumpet sounds. | 39:24 and he won't believe until the trumpet sounds. |
25 He says among the trumpets, ‘Ha, ha'; and he smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
39:25 And when the trumpet sounds, he says, ‘Aha!' and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing. | 39:25 And when the trumpet sounds, he says, ‘Aha!' and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing. |
26 Doth the hawk fly by your wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
39:26 And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south? | 39:26 And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south? |
27 Doth the eagle mount up at your command, and make her nest on high?
39:27 And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest, | 39:27 And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest, |
28 She dwells and abides on the rock, on the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
39:28 on a crag of a rock, and in a secret place? | 39:28 on a crag of a rock, and in a secret place? |
29 From from there she seeks the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
39:29 Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far. | 39:29 Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far. |
30 Her young ones also suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is she.”
39:30 And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.” | 39:30 And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.” |
