Chapter 13
Abram and Lot
1 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the wilderness (the Negev). 2 And Abram was exceedingly rich in cattle and in silver and in gold. 3 And he went by the way he came, into the wilderness as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been before, between Bethel and Aggai (Ai), 4 to the place of the altar which he had made there at the beginning; and there Abram called upon the name of the Lord.
5 And Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had sheep and oxen and tents. 6 And the land did not sustain them to dwell together, because their possessions were many, and they were not able to dwell together. 7 And there was a battle between the herdsmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle; and the Canaanites and the Perizzites then inhabited the land. 8 And Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no battle between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, because we are brother-men. 9 Behold, is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me; if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left."
10 And Lot, having lifted up his eyes, saw all the surrounding region of the Jordan, that it was all well-watered—before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the paradise of God and like the land of Egypt as far as Zogora (Zoar). 11 And Lot chose for himself all the surrounding region of the Jordan, and Lot departed from the east, and they were separated each from his brother. 12 And Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in a city of the surrounding regions and pitched his tent in Sodom. 13 But the men in Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners before God.
14 And God said to Abram after Lot had separated from him, "Having looked up with your eyes, see from the place where you now are, toward the north and south, and east and sea (west); 15 for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your seed forever. 16 And I will make your seed as the sand of the earth; if anyone is able to number the sand of the earth, then your seed shall be numbered. 17 Arise, travel through the land in its length and in its breadth, for I will give it to you." 18 And Abram, having moved his tent, came and dwelt by the oak of Mambre, which was in Hebron, and he built there an altar to the Lord.
