Chapter 45
Joseph Deals Kindly with His Brothers
| 1 And Joseph was no longer able to restrain himself before all those standing by him, but he said, "Send everyone away from me!" And no one stood there with Joseph anymore when he made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he gave forth a cry with weeping; and all the Egyptians heard, and it was heard at the house of Pharaoh. 3 And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?" And his brothers were not able to answer him, for they were troubled. 4 And Joseph said to his brothers, "Come near to me." And they drew near. And he said, "I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 Now therefore, do not be grieved, nor let it appear harsh to you that you sold me here; for God sent me before you for the sake of life. 6 For this is the second year of famine upon the land, and there are still five years remaining in which there shall be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 For God sent me before you to leave for you a remnant upon the earth and to nourish a great remainder of you. 8 Now therefore, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me as a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his house and ruler of all the land of Egypt. 9 Hurry, therefore, and go up to my father and say to him: 'Thus says your son Joseph: God has made me lord of all the land of Egypt; come down to me, then, and do not delay. 10 And you shall dwell in the land of Goshen of Arabia, and you shall be near me—you and your sons and your sons' sons, your sheep and your cattle and all that is yours. 11 And I will nourish you there—for there are still five years of famine—lest you be utterly consumed, you and your sons and all your possessions.' 12 Behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth speaking to you. 13 Report, therefore, to my father all my glory in Egypt and all that you have seen, and hurry and bring my father down here." 14 And falling upon the neck of Benjamin his brother, he wept over him, and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 And having kissed all his brothers, he wept over them; and after these things, his brothers spoke with him. |
| 16 And the report was shouted into the house of Pharaoh, saying, "Joseph’s brothers have come!" And Pharaoh and his attendants were glad. 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Say to your brothers: 'Do this: load your beasts of burden and depart into the land of Canaan, 18 and taking your father and your possessions, come to me; and I will give you of all the good things of Egypt, and you shall eat the marrow (the fat) of the land.' 19 And you, command these things: that they take for themselves wagons from the land of Egypt for your children and your wives, and taking up your father, arrive here. 20 And do not be sparing with your eyes regarding your belongings, for all the good things of Egypt shall be yours." 21 And the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them wagons according to what was spoken by Pharaoh the king, and he gave them provisions for the journey. 22 And to all he gave double sets of clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of gold and five changing sets of clothing. 23 And to his father he sent likewise: ten donkeys carrying from all the good things of Egypt, and ten mules [carrying] bread for his father for the journey. 24 And he sent his brothers away, and they departed; and he said to them, "Do not be angry (do not quarrel) on the way." |
| 25 And they went up out of Egypt and came into the land of Canaan to Jacob their father. 26 And they reported to him, saying, "Your son Joseph is alive, and he is ruler of all the land of Egypt!" And Jacob's mind was stunned (bewildered), for he did not believe them. 27 But they spoke to him all the words spoken by Joseph, whatever he had said to them. And seeing the wagons which Joseph had sent to take him up, the spirit of Jacob their father revived. 28 And Israel said, "It is a great thing to me if Joseph my son is still alive; I will go and see him before I die." |
