A Father's Instruction
1 Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
4:1 Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. | 4:1 Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. |
2 For I give you good doctrine, don't forsake my law.
4:2 For I give you a good gift; don't forsake my law. | 4:2 For I give you a good gift; don't forsake my law. |
3 For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
4:3 For I also was a son obedient to my father, and loved in the sight of my mother. | 4:3 For I also was a son obedient to my father, and loved in the sight of my mother. |
4 He taught me also, and said to me, “Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

4:4 who spoke and instructed me, saying, “Let our speech be fixed in your heart, keep our commandments, don't forget them. | 4:4 who spoke and instructed me, saying, “Let our speech be fixed in your heart, keep our commandments, don't forget them. |
5 Get wisdom, get understanding: don't forget it; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
4:5 and don't neglect the speech of my mouth. | 4:5 and don't neglect the speech of my mouth. |
6 Don't forsake her, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you.
4:6

4:6 And don't forsake it, and it shall cling to you: love it, and it shall keep you. | 4:6 And don't forsake it, and it shall cling to you: love it, and it shall keep you. |
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all your getting get understanding.

8 Exalt her, and she shall promote you: she shall bring you to honour, when you do embrace her.

4:8 Secure it, and it shall exalt you: honour it, that it may embrace you; | 4:8 Secure it, and it shall exalt you: honour it, that it may embrace you; |
9 She shall give to your head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to you.”
4:9 that it may give to your head a crown of graces, and may cover you with a crown of delight.” | 4:9 that it may give to your head a crown of graces, and may cover you with a crown of delight.” |
10 Hear, Oh my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of your life shall be many.
4:10 Hear, my son, and receive my words; and the years of your life shall be increased, that the resources of your life may be many. | 4:10 Hear, my son, and receive my words; and the years of your life shall be increased, that the resources of your life may be many. |
11 I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths.
4:11 For I teach you the ways of wisdom; and I cause you to go in right paths. | 4:11 For I teach you the ways of wisdom; and I cause you to go in right paths. |
12 When you go, your steps shall not be hindered; and when you run, you shall not stumble.
4:12
ἐὰν
γὰρ
οὐ
σου
τὰ
4:12 For when you go, your steps shall not be restrained; and when you run, you shall not be distressed. | 4:12 For when you go, your steps shall not be restrained; and when you run, you shall not be distressed. |
13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is your life.
4:13 Take hold of my instruction; don't let it go, —but keep it for yourself for your life. | 4:13 Take hold of my instruction; don't let it go, —but keep it for yourself for your life. |
14 Don't enter into the path of the wicked, and don't go in the way of evil men.
4:14 Don't go in the ways of the ungodly, neither covet the ways of transgressors. | 4:14 Don't go in the ways of the ungodly, neither covet the ways of transgressors. |
15 Avoid it, don't travel on it, turn from it, and walk away.
4:15 In whatever place they shall encamp, don't go there; but avoid them, and take an alternate path. | 4:15 In whatever place they shall encamp, don't go there; but avoid them, and take an alternate path. |
16 For they don't sleep, unless they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.
4:16
οὐ
γὰρ
μὴ
ἐὰν
μὴ
4:16 For they cannot sleep, unless they have done evil: their sleep is taken away, and they don't rest. | 4:16 For they cannot sleep, unless they have done evil: their sleep is taken away, and they don't rest. |
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.
4:17 For these live on the bread of ungodliness, and are drunken with wine of transgression. | 4:17 For these live on the bread of ungodliness, and are drunken with wine of transgression. |
18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more to the perfect day.
4:18 But the ways of the righteous shine like light; they go on and shine, until the day is fully come. | 4:18 But the ways of the righteous shine like light; they go on and shine, until the day is fully come. |
19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they don't know at what they stumble.
4:19 But the ways of the ungodly are dark; they don't know how they stumble. | 4:19 But the ways of the ungodly are dark; they don't know how they stumble. |
20 My son, attend to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
4:20 My son, attend to my speech; and apply your ear to my words. | 4:20 My son, attend to my speech; and apply your ear to my words. |
21 Don't let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart.
4:21 that your fountains may not fail you; keep them in your heart. | 4:21 that your fountains may not fail you; keep them in your heart. |
22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.
4:22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. | 4:22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. |
23 Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
4:23
σὴν
4:23 Keep your heart with the utmost care; for out of these are the issues of life. | 4:23 Keep your heart with the utmost care; for out of these are the issues of life. |
24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and perverse lips put far from you.
4:24 Remove from you a deceitful mouth, and put unjust lips far away from you. | 4:24 Remove from you a deceitful mouth, and put unjust lips far away from you. |
25 Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before you.
4:25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, and let your eyelids assent1 to just things. | 4:25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, and let your eyelids assent1 to just things. |
26 Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.
4:26 Make straight paths for your feet, and guide your ways correctly. | 4:26 Make straight paths for your feet, and guide your ways correctly. |
27 Don't turn to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil.
4:27 Don't turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, but turn away your foot from an evil way. | 4:27 Don't turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, but turn away your foot from an evil way. |
