Chapter 27
Jacob's Deception
2 καὶ εἶπεν, ἰδοὺ γεγήρακα καὶ οὐ γινώσκω τὴν ἡμέραν τῆς τελευτῆς μου· 3 νῦν οὖν λαβὲ τὸ σκεῦός σου, τήν τε φαρέτραν καὶ τὸ τόξον, καὶ ἔξελθε εἰς τὸ πεδίον καὶ θήρευσόν μοι θήραν 4 καὶ ποίησόν μοι ἐδέσματα, ὡς φιλῶ ἐγώ, καὶ ἔνεγκέ μοι, ἵνα φάγω, ὅπως εὐλογήσῃ σὲ ψυχή μου πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν με. 1 And it came to pass after Isaac had grown old, that his eyes were dimmed so that he could not see; and he called Esau his elder son and said to him, "My son"; and he said, "Behold, here I am." 2 And he said, "Behold, I have grown old, and I do not know the day of my death." 3 "Now therefore, take your equipment, both your quiver and your bow, and go out into the field and hunt game for me." 4 "And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die."
8 "Now therefore, my son, listen to me, according to what I command you." 9 "And go to the flock and take for me from there two tender and good kids, and I will make them into savory food for your father, such as he loves." 10 "And you shall bring them to your father, and he will eat, so that your father may bless you before he dies."
11 But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man." 12 "Lest my father should feel me, and I shall be in his presence as a deceiver, and I shall bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing." 13 And his mother said to him, "Upon me be your curse, child; only obey my voice, and go and bring them to me." 14 And he went and took them and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved.
δὲ εἶπεν, ἰδοὺ ἐγώ· τίς εἶ σύ, τέκνον; 15 And Rebekah took the fine robe of her elder son Esau, which was with her in the house, and put it on her younger son Jacob. 16 And she put the skins of the kids on his arms and on the bare parts of his neck. 17 And she gave the savory food and the bread which she had prepared into the hands of her son Jacob. 18 And he brought them to his father and said, "Father." And he said, "Behold, here I am; who are you, child?"
21 εἶπεν δὲ Ἰσαὰκ τῷ Ἰακώβ, ἔγγισόν μοι, καὶ ψηλαφήσω σε, τέκνον, εἰ σὺ εἶ υἱός μου Ἡσαῦ οὔ. 19 And Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. Rise up, sit, and eat of my game, so that your soul may bless me." 20 And Isaac said to his son, "What is this that you found so quickly, my child?" And he said, "That which the Lord your God delivered before me." 21 And Isaac said to Jacob, "Draw near to me, and I will feel you, child, whether you are my son Esau or not."
22 And Jacob drew near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, "The voice indeed is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau." 23 And he did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like the hands of his brother Esau; and so he blessed him. 24 And he said, "Are you my son Esau?" And he said, "I am." 25 And he said, "Bring it to me, and I will eat of your game, child, that my soul may bless you." And he brought it to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.
26 And his father Isaac said to him, "Draw near to me and kiss me, child." 27 And drawing near he kissed him, and he smelled the smell of his garments and blessed him and said, "Behold, the smell of my son is as the smell of a full field which the Lord has blessed." 28 "And may God give to you of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth, and an abundance of grain and wine." 29 "And let nations serve you, and let rulers bow down to you; and become lord over your brother, and the sons of your father shall bow down to you. He who curses you is cursed, and he who blesses you is blessed."
The Stolen Blessing
30 And it happened, after Isaac had finished blessing his son Jacob, and just as Jacob had gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 And he also made savory food and brought it to his father, and said to his father, "Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, so that your soul may bless me." 32 And Isaac his father said to him, "Who are you?" And he said, "I am your son, your firstborn, Esau."
33 Then Isaac was seized with a very great trembling (ecstasy), and said, "Who then was he who hunted game for me and brought it to me? And I ate of everything before you came, and I blessed him—and indeed, he shall be blessed!" 34 And it happened, when Esau heard the words of Isaac his father, he cried out with a very great and bitter cry and said, "Bless me also, O father!"
καὶ εἶπεν Ἡσαῦ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ, οὐχ ὑπελίπω μοι εὐλογίαν, πάτερ; 35 But he said to him, "Your brother came with guile and took your blessing." 36 And he said, "Rightly was his name called Jacob! For he has now tripped me (supplanted me) this second time; he took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing." And Esau said to his father, "Have you not left a blessing for me, father?"
37 And Isaac answered and said to Esau, "If I have made him your lord, and all his brothers I have made his servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him, what then shall I do for you, child?" 38 And Esau said to his father, "Is there only one blessing with you, father? Bless me also, O father!" And as Isaac was deeply moved (pierced), Esau cried out and wept.
39 Then Isaac his father answered and said to him, "Behold, away from the fatness of the earth shall be your dwelling, and away from the dew of heaven from above." 40 "And by your sword you shall live, and your brother you shall serve; but it shall be, whenever you cast off his yoke, you shall loosen it from your neck."
42 ἀπηγγέλη δὲ Ῥεβέκκα τὰ ῥήματα Ἡσαῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτῆς τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου, καὶ πέμψασα ἐκάλεσεν Ἰακὼβ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν νεώτερον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἰδοὺ Ἡσαῦ ἀδελφός σου ἀπειλεῖ σοί τοῦ ἀποκτεῖναί σε. 41 And Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said in his mind, "Let the days of mourning for my father draw near, so that I may kill my brother Jacob." 42 And the words of Esau her elder son were reported to Rebekah; and she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, "Behold, your brother Esau is threatening you, intending to kill you."
43 "Now therefore, child, listen to my voice; rise up and flee to Mesopotamia, to my brother Laban in Haran." 44 "And dwell with him for a few days, until the fury [of your brother] turns away," 45 "and the anger of your brother turns from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and fetch you from there. Why should I be bereaved of both of you in a single day?"
46 εἶπεν δὲ Ῥεβέκκα πρὸς Ἰσαάκ, προσώχθικα τῇ ζωῇ μου διὰ τὰς θυγατέρας τῶν υἱῶν Χέτ· εἰ λήμψεται Ἰακὼβ γυναῖκα ἀπὸ τῶν θυγατέρων τῆς γῆς ταύτης, ἵνα τί μοι ζῆν; 46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the daughters of the sons of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of this land, why should I even live?"
