| 1 And when Rachel saw that she bore no children to Jacob, Rachel envied her sister and said to Jacob, "Give me children; otherwise, I shall die." 2 And Jacob was angry with Rachel and said to her, "Am I in the place of God, who has deprived you of the fruit of the womb?" 3 And Rachel said to Jacob, "Behold my maid Bilhah; go in to her, and she shall bear upon my knees, and I also shall have children through her." 4 And she gave him Bilhah her maid as a wife, and Jacob went in to her. 5 And Bilhah, Rachel's maid, conceived and bore a son to Jacob. 6 And Rachel said, "God has judged for me, and has heard my voice and given me a son"; therefore she called his name Dan.

| 14 And Reuben went in the days of the wheat harvest and found mandrake apples in the field and brought them to Leah his mother. And Rachel said to Leah, "Give me some of your son's mandrakes." 15 And Leah said, "Is it a small thing that you have taken my husband? Would you also take my son's mandrakes?" And Rachel said, "Not so; let him sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son's mandrakes." 16 And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him and said, "You must come in to me today, for I have surely hired you in exchange for my son's mandrakes." And he slept with her that night.

| 17 And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore a fifth son to Jacob. 18 And Leah said, "God has given me my reward because I gave my maid to my husband"; and she called his name Issachar, which is 'Reward'. 19 And Leah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Jacob. 20 And Leah said, "God has gifted me a good gift; now at this time my husband will choose me, for I have borne him six sons"; and she called his name Zebulun. 21 And after this, she bore a daughter, and she called her name Dinah. 22 And God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. 23 And she conceived and bore a son to Jacob. And Rachel said, "God has taken away my reproach." 24 And she called his name Joseph, saying, "May God add to me another son."

Now then, when shall I also provide for my own house?" 31 And Laban said to him, "What shall I give you?" And Jacob said to him, "You shall give me nothing; if you will do this thing for me, I will again pasture your sheep and guard them." 32 "Let all your sheep pass by today, and separate from there every gray sheep among the lambs, and every white-spotted and spotted one among the goats; this shall be my wage."

And the sheep brought forth white-spotted and variegated and ash-spotted ones.

| 40 And Jacob separated the lambs and set before the sheep a white-spotted ram and everything variegated among the lambs; and he set apart flocks for himself by himself and did not mix them with the sheep of Laban. 41 And it happened, at the time when the sheep were conceiving in the womb, Jacob placed the rods before the sheep in the troughs, so that they might conceive according to the rods. 42 But whenever the sheep brought forth, he did not place them. So the unmarked ones became Laban’s, and the marked ones became Jacob’s. 43 And the man became exceedingly wealthy, and he had many livestock and cattle and male and female servants and camels and donkeys.
