Chapter 31
Jacob Leaves Secretly for Canaan
4 ἀποστείλας δὲ Ἰακὼβ ἐκάλεσεν Ῥαχὴλ καὶ Λείαν εἰς τὸ πεδίον, οὗ τὰ ποίμνια, 1 And Jacob heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, "Jacob has taken everything of our father’s, and from our father’s property he has acquired all this glory." 2 And Jacob saw the face of Laban, and behold, it was not toward him as it had been yesterday and the day before. 3 And the Lord said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your father and to your kin, and I will be with you." 4 Then Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah into the field where the flocks were.
5 And he said to them, "I see your father’s face, that it is not toward me as it was yesterday and the day before; but the God of my father has been with me." 6 "And you yourselves know that with all my strength I have served your father." 7 "But your father has deceived me and changed my wage of ten lambs, yet God did not allow him to harm me." 8 "If he said thus, 'The variegated ones shall be your wage,' then all the sheep bore variegated ones; and if he said, 'The white ones shall be your wage,' then all the sheep bore white ones." 9 "And God has taken away all the livestock of your father and given them to me."
10 "And it happened at the time when the sheep were conceiving, that I saw them with my eyes in sleep, and behold, the he-goats and the rams mounting the sheep and the goats were white-spotted, and variegated, and ash-spotted." 11 "And the angel of God said to me in a dream, 'Jacob!' and I said, 'What is it?'" 12 "And he said, 'Look up with your eyes and see the he-goats and the rams mounting the sheep and the goats—white-spotted, and variegated, and ash-spotted; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.'" 13 "I am the God who appeared to you in the place of God (Bethel), where you anointed a pillar to me and made a vow to me there. Now therefore, arise and go out from this land and depart to the land of your birth, and I will be with you."
14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, "Is there any longer a portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?" 15 "Are we not accounted as foreigners to him? For he has sold us and has entirely consumed our money." 16 "All the wealth and the glory which God has taken from our father shall be ours and our children’s. Now therefore, whatever God has said to you, do."
17 Then Jacob arose and took his wives and his children upon the camels. 18 And he drove away all his belongings and all his property which he had acquired in Mesopotamia, and all that was his, to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. 19 Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep; and Rachel stole the idols (teraphim) of her father. 20 And Jacob outwitted Laban the Syrian by not announcing to him that he was fleeing. 21 So he fled, he and all that was his; and he crossed the river [Euphrates] and set out toward Mount Gilead.
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 And it was told to Laban the Syrian on the third day that Jacob had fled. 23 And taking all his kinsmen with him, he pursued after him a seven days' journey and overtook him in the mountain of Gilead. 24 But God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night and said to him, "Take heed to yourself, lest you speak to Jacob anything evil." 25 And Laban overtook Jacob; now Jacob had pitched his tent on the mountain, and Laban stationed his kinsmen on the mountain of Gilead.
30 νῦν οὖν πεπόρευσαι· ἐπιθυμίᾳ γὰρ ἐπεθύμησας ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός σου· ἵνα τί ἔκλεψας τοὺς θεούς μου; 26 And Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done? Why did you flee secretly and outwit me and lead away my daughters like captives of the sword?" 27 "If you had told me, I would have sent you away with gladness and with music, with tambourines and the lyre." 28 "I was not even accounted worthy to kiss my children and my daughters. Now you have acted foolishly." 29 "And now my hand has power to harm you; but the God of your father spoke to me yesterday, saying, 'Take heed to yourself, lest you speak to Jacob anything evil.'" 30 "Now then, you have gone because you greatly longed to depart to your father's house; but why did you steal my gods?"
31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, "For I said [to myself], 'Lest you take your daughters from me and everything of mine.'" 32 "Identify what of yours is with me, and take it." (And he recognized nothing with him.) And Jacob said to him, "With whomever you find your gods, he shall not live in the presence of our kinsmen." For Jacob did not know that Rachel his wife had stolen them.
33 And Laban entered and searched in the house of Leah and found nothing; and going out from the house of Leah, he searched the house of Jacob and in the house of the two maids, and found nothing. He entered also into the house of Rachel. 34 But Rachel had taken the idols and put them into the camel’s saddle-packs and sat upon them. 35 And she said to her father, "Do not take it heavily, my lord; I cannot rise before you, for the custom of women is upon me." And Laban searched in the whole house and did not find the idols.
36 And Jacob became angry and disputed with Laban; and Jacob answered and said to Laban, "What is my injustice and what is my sin, that you have hotly pursued after me?" 37 "And that you have searched all my goods? What have you found of all the goods of your house? Set it here before my kinsmen and your kinsmen, and let them judge between the two of us." 38 "These twenty years I have been with you; your sheep and your goats have not miscarried; the rams of your sheep I have not eaten." 39 "That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I made good from myself the thefts of the day and the thefts of the night." 40 "I was by day consumed by the heat and by the frost of the night, and sleep departed from my eyes." 41 "These twenty years I have been in your house; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your sheep, and you cheated my wage by ten lambs." 42 "Unless the God of my father Abraham and the Fear of Isaac were with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. God saw my humiliation and the labor of my hands, and he rebuked you yesterday."
Covenant of Mizpah
43 And Laban answered and said to Jacob, "These daughters are my daughters, and these sons are my sons, and these livestock are my livestock, and all that you see is mine and my daughters'. But what can I do to them today, or to their children whom they have borne?" 44 "Now therefore, come, let us make a covenant, I and you; and let it be for a witness between me and you." And he said to him, "Behold, no one is with us; see, God is witness between me and you." 45 And Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46 And Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather stones." And they gathered stones and made a mound; and they ate and drank there upon the mound.
50 εἰ ταπεινώσεις τὰς θυγατέρας μου, εἰ λήμψῃ γυναῖκας ἐπὶ ταῖς θυγατράσιν μου, ὅρα οὐθεὶς μεθ' ἡμῶν ἐστιν· 47 And Laban called it "Mound of Witness" (Jegar-sahadutha), but Jacob called it "Mound is Witness" (Galeed). 48 And Laban said to Jacob, "This mound witnesses and this pillar witnesses between me and you today." For this reason its name was called "Mound Witnesses" 49 and also "The Vision," for he said, "May God keep watch between me and you, when we are separated from one another." 50 "If you humiliate my daughters, or if you take other wives besides my daughters, see, no one is with us—[God is witness]."
51 And Laban said to Jacob, "Behold this mound and witness this pillar." 52 "For if I do not pass over to you, and if you do not pass over to me, beyond this mound and this pillar for harm," 53 "the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor shall judge between us." And Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac. 54 And Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen; and they ate and drank and slept on the mountain. 55 And rising early in the morning, Laban kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them; and Laban, having turned away, departed to his own place.
