Chapter 32
Jacob's Fear of Esau
1 καὶ Ἰακὼβ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδόν. καὶ ἀναβλέψας εἶδεν παρεμβολὴν θεοῦ παρεμβεβληκυῖαν, καὶ συνήντησαν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ. 1 And Jacob went on his way. And looking up, he saw a camp of God encamped, and the angels of God met him.
2 εἶπεν δὲ Ἰακώβ, ἡνίκα εἶδεν αὐτούς, Παρεμβολὴ θεοῦ αὕτη· καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Παρεμβολαί. 2 And Jacob said when he saw them, "This is the camp of God"; and he called the name of that place "Camps" (Mahanaim).
3 ἀπέστειλεν δὲ Ἰακὼβ ἀγγέλους ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πρὸς Ἡσαῦ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ εἰς γῆν Σηὶρ εἰς χώραν Ἐδὼμ 4 καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς λέγων, οὕτως ἐρεῖτε τῷ κυρίῳ μου Ἡσαῦ, οὕτως λέγει ὁ παῖς σου Ἰακώβ, μετὰ Λαβὰν παρῴκησα καὶ ἐχρόνισα ἕως τοῦ νῦν, 5 καὶ ἐγένοντό μοι βόες καὶ ὄνοι καὶ πρόβατα καὶ παῖδες καὶ παιδίσκαι, καὶ ἀπέστειλα ἀναγγεῖλαι τῷ κυρίῳ μου Ἡσαῦ, ἵνα εὕρῃ ὁ παῖς σου χάριν ἐναντίον σου. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother into the land of Seir, into the country of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: 'Thus says your servant Jacob: I have lived as a stranger with Laban and stayed until now; 5 and I have oxen and donkeys and sheep and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord Esau, so that your servant may find favor in your sight.'"
6 καὶ ἀνέστρεψαν οἱ ἄγγελοι πρὸς Ἰακὼβ λέγοντες, ἤλθομεν πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφόν σου Ἡσαῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ἔρχεται εἰς συνάντησίν σοί καὶ τετρακόσιοι ἄνδρες μετ' αὐτοῦ. 7 ἐφοβήθη δὲ Ἰακὼβ σφόδρα καὶ ἠπορεῖτο. καὶ διεῖλεν τὸν λαὸν τὸν μετ' αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς βόας καὶ τὰ πρόβατα εἰς δύο παρεμβολάς. 8 καὶ εἶπεν Ἰακώβ, ἐὰν ἔλθῃ Ἡσαῦ εἰς παρεμβολὴν μίαν καὶ ἐκκόψῃ αὐτήν, ἔσται ἡ παρεμβολὴ ἡ δευτέρα εἰς τὸ σῴζεσθαι. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and behold, he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him." 7 And Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. And he divided the people who were with him, and the oxen and the sheep, into two camps. 8 And Jacob said, "If Esau comes to one camp and cuts it down, the second camp will be for escaping."
9 εἶπεν δὲ Ἰακώβ, ὁ θεὸς τοῦ πατρός μου Ἁβραὰμ καὶ ὁ θεὸς τοῦ πατρός μου Ἰσαὰκ κύριε ὁ εἴπας μοι, ἀπότρεχε εἰς τὴν γῆν τῆς γενέσεώς σου καὶ εὖ σὲ ποιήσω, 10 ἱκανοῦταί μοι ἀπὸ πάσης δικαιοσύνης καὶ ἀπὸ πάσης ἀληθείας, ἧς ἐποίησας τῷ παιδί σου· ἐν γὰρ τῇ ῥάβδῳ μου διέβην τὸν Ἰορδάνην τοῦτον, νῦν δὲ γέγονα εἰς δύο παρεμβολάς. 11 ἐξελοῦ με ἐκ χειρὸς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μου Ἡσαῦ, ὅτι φοβοῦμαι ἐγὼ αὐτόν, μήποτε ἐλθὼν πατάξῃ με καὶ μητέρα ἐπὶ τέκνοις. 12 σὺ δὲ εἶπας, καλῶς εὖ σὲ ποιήσω καὶ θήσω τὸ σπέρμα σου ὡς τὴν ἄμμον τῆς θαλάσσης, ἣ οὐκ ἀριθμηθήσεται ἀπὸ τοῦ πλήθους. 9 And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me, 'Return to the land of your birth and I will do you good,' 10 I am worthy of all the righteousness and all the truth which you have shown to your servant; for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. 11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mother with the children. 12 But you said, 'I will surely do you good, and I will make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'"
13 καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἐκεῖ τὴν νύκτα ἐκείνην. καὶ ἔλαβεν ὧν ἔφερεν δῶρα καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν Ἡσαῦ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ, 14 αἶγας διακοσίας, τράγους εἴκοσι, πρόβατα διακόσια, κριοὺς εἴκοσι, 15 καμήλους θηλαζούσας καὶ τὰ παιδία αὐτῶν τριάκοντα, βόας τεσσαράκοντα, ταύρους δέκα, ὄνους εἴκοσι καὶ πώλους δέκα. 16 καὶ ἔδωκεν διὰ χειρὸς τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ ποίμνιον κατὰ μόνας. εἶπεν δὲ τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ, προπορεύεσθε ἔμπροσθέν μου καὶ διάστημα ποιεῖτε ἀνὰ μέσον ποίμνης καὶ ποίμνης. 17 καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ πρώτῳ λέγων, ἐάν σοί συναντήσῃ Ἡσαῦ ὁ ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἐρωτᾷ σὲ λέγων, τίνος εἶ καὶ ποῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ τίνος ταῦτα τὰ προπορευόμενά σου; 18 ἐρεῖς, τοῦ παιδὸς σου Ἰακώβ· δῶρα ἀπέσταλκεν τῷ κυρίῳ μου Ἡσαῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ὀπίσω ἡμῶν. 19 καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ πρώτῳ καὶ τῷ δευτέρῳ καὶ τῷ τρίτῳ καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς προπορευομένοις ὀπίσω τῶν ποιμνίων τούτων λέγων, κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο λαλήσατε Ἡσαῦ ἐν τῷ εὑρεῖν ὑμᾶς αὐτὸν 20 καὶ ἐρεῖτε, ἰδοὺ ὁ παῖς σου Ἰακὼβ παραγίνεται ὀπίσω ἡμῶν. εἶπεν γάρ, ἐξιλάσομαι τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, ἐν τοῖς δώροις τοῖς προπορευομένοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ὄψομαι τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ· ἴσως γὰρ προσδέξεται τὸ πρόσωπόν μου. 21 καὶ παρεπορεύοντο τὰ δῶρα κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς δὲ ἐκοιμήθη τὴν νύκτα ἐκείνην ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ. 22 ἀναστὰς δὲ τὴν νύκτα ἐκείνην ἔλαβεν τὰς δύο γυναῖκας καὶ τὰς δύο παιδίσκας καὶ τὰ ἕνδεκα παιδία αὐτοῦ καὶ διέβη τὴν διάβασιν τοῦ Ἰαβόκ·1 23 καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτοὺς καὶ διέβη τὸν χειμάρρουν καὶ διεβίβασεν πάντα τὰ αὐτοῦ. 13 And he slept there that night. And he took from what he brought gifts and sent them to Esau his brother: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred female sheep and twenty rams, 15 thirty milking camels and their young, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty donkeys and ten colts. 16 And he delivered them through the hands of his servants, each drove by itself. And he said to his servants, "Go on before me and put a space between drove and drove." 17 And he commanded the first, saying, "If Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and whose are these things going before you?' 18 you shall say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob; they are gifts sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he is behind us.'" 19 And he commanded the first and the second and the third and all those following after these droves, saying, "According to this word you shall speak to Esau when you find him, 20 and you shall say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob is coming behind us.'" For he said, "I will appease his face with the gifts going before him, and after this I will see his face; for perhaps he will accept my face." 21 And the gifts went on before him, but he himself slept that night in the camp. 22 And rising up that night, he took his two wives and the two female servants and his eleven children and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok. 23 And he took them and crossed the stream and sent across all his possessions.
Jacob Wrestles
24 ὑπελείφθη δὲ Ἰακὼβ μόνος, καὶ ἐπάλαιεν ἄνθρωπος μετ' αὐτοῦ ἕως πρωί. 25 εἶδεν δὲ ὅτι οὐ δύναται πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ ἥψατο τοῦ πλάτους τοῦ μηροῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐνάρκησεν τὸ πλάτος τοῦ μηροῦ Ἰακὼβ ἐν τῷ παλαίειν αὐτὸν μετ' αὐτοῦ. 26 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἀπόστειλόν με· ἀνέβη γὰρ ὁ ὄρθρος. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, οὐ μή σὲ ἀποστείλω, ἐὰν μή με εὐλογήσῃς, 27 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ, τί τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐστιν; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἰακώβ. 28 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ, οὐ κληθήσεται ἔτι τὸ ὄνομά σου Ἰακώβ, ἀλλὰ Ἰσραὴλ ἔσται τὸ ὄνομά σου, ὅτι ἐνίσχυσας μετὰ θεοῦ καὶ μετὰ ἀνθρώπων δυνατός. 29 ἠρώτησεν δὲ Ἰακὼβ καὶ εἶπεν, ἀνάγγειλόν μοι τὸ ὄνομά σου. καὶ εἶπεν, ἵνα τί τοῦτο ἐρωτᾷς τὸ ὄνομά μου; καὶ ηὐλόγησεν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ. 30 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰακὼβ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Εἶδος θεοῦ· εἶδον γὰρ θεὸν πρόσωπον, πρὸς πρόσωπον καὶ ἐσώθη μου ἡ ψυχή. 31 ἀνέτειλεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ἥλιος, ἡνίκα παρῆλθεν τὸ Εἶδος τοῦ θεοῦ· αὐτὸς δὲ ἐπέσκαζεν τῷ μηρῷ αὐτοῦ. 32 ἕνεκεν τούτου οὐ μὴ φάγωσιν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ τὸ νεῦρον, ὃ ἐνάρκησεν, ὅ ἐστιν ἐπὶ τοῦ πλάτους τοῦ μηροῦ, ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης, ὅτι ἥψατο τοῦ πλάτους τοῦ μηροῦ Ἰακὼβ τοῦ νεύρου καὶ ἐνάρκησεν. 24 And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until morning. 25 And he [the man] saw that he was not prevailing against him, and he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh became numb as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said to him, "Let me go, for the dawn has risen." But he [Jacob] said, "I will certainly not let you go unless you bless me." 27 And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." 28 And he said to him, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name; for you have prevailed with God, and are powerful with men." 29 And Jacob asked and said, "Tell me your name." And he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of that place "Form of God" (Peniel/Penuel); "For I saw God face to face, and my life was preserved." 31 And the sun rose upon him as he passed the "Form of God"; and he limped because of his thigh. 32 Because of this, the sons of Israel do not eat the tendon that shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, until this day; because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh—the tendon—and it became numb.
