| 1 And it happened after these things that the chief cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the chief baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two eunuchs (officials), with the chief cupbearer and with the chief baker, 3 and he put them in custody under the chief jailer, in the prison, in the place where Joseph had been taken. 4 And the chief jailer assigned them to Joseph, and he attended to them; and they were in custody for some days.

| 5 And they both dreamed a dream, each his own dream in one night, each with its own appearance of the dream—the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, who belonged to the king of Egypt, who were in the prison. 6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning and saw them, and they were troubled. 7 And he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were with him in the custody of his lord, saying, "Why are your faces gloomy today?" 8 And they said to him, "We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it." And Joseph said to them, "Is not their clarification through God? Relate it to me, then."

| 9 And the chief cupbearer related his dream to Joseph and said, "In my sleep, there was a vine before me; 10 and on the vine were three branches, and it was budding, having brought forth shoots; the clusters of grapes were ripe. 11 And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and squeezed them into the cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hands." 12 And Joseph said to him, "This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days; 13 yet three days and Pharaoh will remember your office and restore you to your position as chief cupbearer, and you will give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand according to your former office, just as you used to be his cupbearer. 14 But remember me through yourself when it goes well for you, and you shall perform mercy for me, and you shall mention me to Pharaoh and bring me out of this fortress; 15 for I was stolen away by theft from the land of the Hebrews, and here I have done nothing, yet they threw me into this pit."

| 16 And the chief baker saw that he [Joseph] had interpreted correctly, and he said to Joseph, "I also saw a dream, and I thought I was carrying three baskets of fine bread on my head; 17 and in the uppermost basket there were all the kinds of things which King Pharaoh eats, the work of a baker, and the birds of the sky were eating them out of the basket that was on my head." 18 And Joseph answered and said to him, "This is the interpretation of it: the three baskets are three days; 19 yet three days and Pharaoh will take away your head from you and hang you on a tree, and the birds of the sky will eat your flesh from you."

| 20 And it happened on the third day, it was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he made a feast for all his servants, and he remembered the office of the chief cupbearer and the office of the chief baker in the midst of his servants. 21 And he restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand, 22 but the chief baker he hanged, just as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph; instead, he forgot him.
