Chapter 41
Pharaoh's Dream
1 And it happened after two full years that Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought he was standing by the river, 2 and behold, as if out of the river, there came up seven cows, beautiful in appearance and choice in flesh, and they grazed in the reed-grass. 3 And seven other cows came up after these out of the river, ugly in appearance and thin in flesh, and they grazed beside the cows along the lip of the river. 4 And the seven cows that were ugly and thin in flesh devoured the seven cows that were beautiful in appearance and choice. And Pharaoh awoke. 5 And he dreamed a second time, and behold, seven ears of grain were coming up on a single stalk, choice and beautiful. 6 And seven other ears, thin and blasted by the wind, were springing up after them. 7 And the seven thin and wind-blasted ears swallowed up the seven choice and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and it was a dream.
8 And it happened in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called all the interpreters of Egypt and all its wise men, and Pharaoh related the dream to them, and there was no one who could report it [the interpretation] to Pharaoh. 9 Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, "I remember my sin today. 10 Pharaoh was angry with his servants and put us in custody in the house of the chief cook, both me and the chief baker. 11 And we saw a dream in a single night, I and he; each of us saw a dream according to his own interpretation. 12 And there was there with us a Hebrew youth, a servant of the chief cook, and we related it to him, and he interpreted for us. 13 And it happened just as he interpreted for us, so also it turned out: I was restored to my office, and he [the baker] was hanged."
Joseph Interprets
14 And Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him out of the fortress; and they shaved him and changed his clothing, and he came to Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have seen a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it; but I have heard about you people saying that when you hear dreams, you can interpret them." 16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "Apart from God, a favorable answer (the salvation) for Pharaoh will not be given." 17 And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, "In my sleep, I thought I was standing by the lip of the river, 18 and as if out of the river, seven cows came up, beautiful in appearance and choice in flesh, and they grazed in the reed-grass. 19 And behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, poor and ugly in appearance and thin in flesh; such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for ugliness. 20 And the seven ugly and thin cows devoured the first seven cows, the beautiful and choice ones; 21 and they entered into their bellies, and it was not noticeable that they had entered into their bellies, and their appearance was ugly just as in the beginning. And having awakened, I fell asleep again 22 and saw again in my sleep, and as if seven ears of grain were coming up on a single stalk, full and beautiful. 23 And seven other ears, thin and wind-blasted, were springing up next to them. 24 And the seven thin and wind-blasted ears swallowed up the seven beautiful and full ears. So I spoke to the interpreters, and there was no one who could report it to me."
25 And Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dream of Pharaoh is one; what God is about to do, He has shown to Pharaoh. 26 The seven beautiful cows are seven years, and the seven beautiful ears are seven years; the dream of Pharaoh is one. 27 And the seven thin cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin and wind-blasted ears shall be seven years of famine. 28 And as for the word which I spoke to Pharaoh: 'What God is about to do, He has shown to Pharaoh,' 29 behold, seven years of great plenty are coming in all the land of Egypt. 30 But seven years of famine will come after these, and they will forget the abundance in all the land of Egypt, and the famine will consume the land. 31 And the abundance will not be recognized upon the land because of the famine that will be after this; for it will be very severe. 32 And concerning the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice: it is because the matter from God will be true, and God will hasten to do it. 33 Now therefore, look for a man prudent and wise and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 And let Pharaoh act and appoint governors over the land, and let them take a fifth of all the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven years of plenty. 35 And let them gather all the food of these coming seven good years, and let the grain be gathered under the hand of Pharaoh; let food be kept in the cities. 36 And the food shall be kept for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, and the land shall not be destroyed by the famine."
37 Ἤρεσεν δὲ τὰ ῥήματα ἐναντίον Φαραὼ καὶ ἐναντίον πάντων τῶν παίδων αὐτοῦ, 37 And the words were pleasing in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of all his servants.
Joseph Is Made a Ruler of Egypt
38 And Pharaoh said to all his servants, "Shall we find such a man as this, who has the Spirit of God in him?" 39 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has shown you all these things, there is no man more prudent or wiser than you. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be obedient to your mouth; only in the throne will I be greater than you." 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Behold, I appoint you today over all the land of Egypt." 42 And taking the signet ring from his hand, Pharaoh put it upon the hand of Joseph, and dressed him in a robe of fine linen, and put a golden chain around his neck. 43 And he had him mount his second chariot, and a herald proclaimed before him; and he set him over all the land of Egypt. 44 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh; without you, no one shall lift up his hand over all the land of Egypt." 45 And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Psonthomphanech (Zaphenath-Paneah); and he gave him Aseneth, the daughter of Pentephres, the priest of Heliopolis, to be his wife. 46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and traveled through all the land of Egypt. 47 And the land produced handfuls [of grain] during the seven years of plenty. 48 And he gathered all the food of the seven years in which there was plenty in the land of Egypt, and he put the food in the cities—the food of the fields of the city round about it, he put within it. 49 And Joseph gathered grain like the sand of the sea, very much indeed, until they were not able to count it, for there was no number.
The Sons of Joseph
50 And to Joseph were born two sons before the seven years of famine came, whom Aseneth, the daughter of Pentephres, the priest of Heliopolis, bore to him. 51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, for [he said], "God has made me forget all my labors and all those of my father." 52 And the name of the second he called Ephraim, for [he said], "God has increased me in the land of my humiliation."
57 καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ χῶραι ἦλθον εἰς Αἴγυπτον ἀγοράζειν πρὸς Ἰωσήφ· ἐπεκράτησεν γὰρ λιμὸς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ. 53 And the seven years of plenty which occurred in the land of Egypt passed away, 54 and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. And there was famine in all the earth, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 And all the land of Egypt was hungry, and the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph, and whatever he says to you, do." 56 And the famine was upon the face of all the earth; and Joseph opened all the granaries and sold to all the Egyptians. 57 And all the countries came to Egypt to buy from Joseph, for the famine prevailed in all the earth.
