Job Says His Friends' Proverbs Are Ashes
1 “Lo, my eye has seen all this, my ear has heard and understood it.
13:1 “Behold, my eye has seen these things, and my ear has heard them. | 13:1 “Behold, my eye has seen these things, and my ear has heard them. |
2 What you know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior to you.
13:2 And I know all that you too know; and I haven't less understanding than you. | 13:2 And I know all that you too know; and I haven't less understanding than you. |
3 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.
13:3 Nevertheless I will speak to the Lord, and I will reason before him, if he will. | 13:3 Nevertheless I will speak to the Lord, and I will reason before him, if he will. |
4 But you are forgers of lies, you are all physicians of no value.
13:4 But you are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases. | 13:4 But you are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases. |
5 Oh that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.
13:5 But would that you were silent, and it would be wisdom to you in the end. | 13:5 But would that you were silent, and it would be wisdom to you in the end. |
6 Hear now my reasoning, and listen to the pleadings of my lips.
13:6 But hear you the reasoning of my mouth, and attend to the judgment of my lips. | 13:6 But hear you the reasoning of my mouth, and attend to the judgment of my lips. |
7 Will you speak wickedly for God? And talk craftily for him?
13:7 Do you not speak before the Lord, and utter deceit before him? | 13:7 Do you not speak before the Lord, and utter deceit before him? |
8 Will you accept his person? Will you contend for God?
13:8
ἦ
13:8 Or will you draw back? No do, you yourselves be judges. | 13:8 Or will you draw back? No do, you yourselves be judges. |
9 Is it good that he should search you out? Or as one man mocks another, do you so mock him?
13:9
γε,
ἐὰν
13:9 For it were well if he would thoroughly search you; for though doing all things in your power you should attach yourselves to him, | 13:9 For it were well if he would thoroughly search you; for though doing all things in your power you should attach yourselves to him, |
10 He will surely reprove you, if you do secretly accept persons.
13:10
13:10 he won't reprove you at all the less; but if moreover you should secretly respect persons, | 13:10 he won't reprove you at all the less; but if moreover you should secretly respect persons, |
11 Shall not his excellency make you afraid? And his dread fall on you?
13:11 shall not his whirlpool s weep you round, and terror from him fall on you? | 13:11 shall not his whirlpool s weep you round, and terror from him fall on you? |
12 Your remembrances are like to ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.
13:12 And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body like a body of clay. | 13:12 And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body like a body of clay. |
Job Is Sure He will be Vindicated
13 Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.
13:13 Be silent, that I may speak, and cease from my anger, | 13:13 Be silent, that I may speak, and cease from my anger, |
14 Why do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?
13:14 while I may take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. | 13:14 while I may take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. |
15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him; but I will maintain my own ways before him.
13:15 Though the Mighty One should lay hand on me, since he has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before him. | 13:15 Though the Mighty One should lay hand on me, since he has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before him. |
16 He also shall be my salvation; for a hypocrite shall not come before him.
13:16 And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. | 13:16 And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. |
17 Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.
13:17
τὰ
13:17 Hear, hear you my words, for I will declare in your hearing. | 13:17 Hear, hear you my words, for I will declare in your hearing. |
18 Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.
13:18 Behold, I am near my judgment: I know that I shall appear evidently just. | 13:18 Behold, I am near my judgment: I know that I shall appear evidently just. |
19 Who is he who will plead with me? For now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the spirit.
13:19
τίς
γάρ
ὁ
13:19 For who is he who shall plead with me, that I should now be silent, and expire? | 13:19 For who is he who shall plead with me, that I should now be silent, and expire? |
20 Only don't two things to me: then will I not hide myself from you.
13:20
δέ
μοι
13:20 But grant me two things: then I won't hide myself from your face. | 13:20 But grant me two things: then I won't hide myself from your face. |
21 Withdraw your hand far from me; and don't let your dread make me afraid.
13:21 Withhold your hand from me; and don't let your fear terrify me. | 13:21 Withhold your hand from me; and don't let your fear terrify me. |
22 Then call you, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer me.
13:22
ἐγὼ
δέ
σοί
13:22 Then you shall call, and I will listen to you: or you shall speak, and I will give you an answer. | 13:22 Then you shall call, and I will listen to you: or you shall speak, and I will give you an answer. |
23 How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin.
13:23
αἱ
μου
καὶ
αἱ
13:23 How many are my sins and my transgressions? Teach me what they are. | 13:23 How many are my sins and my transgressions? Teach me what they are. |
24 Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy?
13:24 Why hide you yourself from me, and deem me your enemy? | 13:24 Why hide you yourself from me, and deem me your enemy? |
25 Will you break a leaf driven to and fro? And will you pursue the dry stubble?
13:25 Will you be startled at me, as at a leaf shaken by the wind? Or will you set yourself against me as against grass carried on the breeze? | 13:25 Will you be startled at me, as at a leaf shaken by the wind? Or will you set yourself against me as against grass carried on the breeze? |
26 For you write bitter things against me, and make me to possess the iniquities of my youth.
13:26 for you have written evil things against me, and you have surrounded me with the sins of my youth. | 13:26 for you have written evil things against me, and you have surrounded me with the sins of my youth. |
27 You put my feet also in the stocks, and look narrowly to all my paths; you set a print on the heels of my feet.
13:27 And you have placed my foot in the stocks; and you have watched all my works, and have penetrated my heels. | 13:27 And you have placed my foot in the stocks; and you have watched all my works, and have penetrated my heels. |
28 And he, as a rotten thing, consumes, as a garment that is moth eaten.
13:28 I am as what waxes old like a bottle, or like a moth-eaten garment. | 13:28 I am as what waxes old like a bottle, or like a moth-eaten garment. |
