Chapter 16

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Job: You Friends are Sorry Comforters

1 Then Job answered and said,

16:1 But Job answered and said, 16:1 But Job answered and said,

2 “I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all.

16:2 “I have heard many such things: poor comforters are you all. 16:2 “I have heard many such things: poor comforters are you all.

3 Shall vain words have an end? Or what emboldens you that you answer?

16:3 τί γάρ;
μὴ τάξις ἐστὶν ῥήμασιν πνεύματος;
τί παρενοχλήσει σοι, ὅτι ἀποκρίνῃ;
16:3 τί γάρ;
μὴ τάξις ἐστὶ ῥήμασι πνεύματος;
τί παρενοχλήσει σοι, ὅτι ἀποκρίνῃ;
16:3 What! is there any reason in vain words? Or what will hinder you from answering? 16:3 What! is there any reason in vain words? Or what will hinder you from answering?

4 I also could speak as you do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you.

16:4 I also will speak as you do: if indeed your soul were in my soul's stead, then would I insult you with words, and I would shake my head at you. 16:4 I also will speak as you do: if indeed your soul were in my soul's stead, then would I insult you with words, and I would shake my head at you.

5 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should assuage your grief.

16:5 And would there were strength in my mouth, and I would not spare the movement of my lips. 16:5 And would there were strength in my mouth, and I would not spare the movement of my lips.

Job: God Has Shattered Me

6 Though I speak, my grief is not assuaged; and though I forbear, what am I eased?

ἐὰν δὲ καὶ σιωπήσω, τί ἔλαττον τρωθήσομαι;
ἐὰν δὲ καὶ σιωπήσω, τί ἔλαττον τρωθήσομαι;
16:6 For if I should speak, I shall not feel the pain of my wound; and if I should be silent, how shall I be wounded the less? 16:6 For if I should speak, I shall not feel the pain of my wound; and if I should be silent, how shall I be wounded the less?

7 But now he has made me weary: you have made desolate all my company.

16:7 But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and you have laid hold of me. 16:7 But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and you have laid hold of me.

8 And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me; and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face.

16:8 My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face. 16:8 My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face.

9 He tears me in his wrath, who hates me: he gnashes on me with his teeth; my enemy sharpens his eyes on me.

16:9 In his anger he has cast me down; he has gnashed his teeth on me: the weapons of his robbers have fallen on me. 16:9 In his anger he has cast me down; he has gnashed his teeth on me: the weapons of his robbers have fallen on me.

10 They have gaped on me with their mouth; they have smitten me on the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me.

16:10 He has attacked me with the keen glances of his eyes; with his sharp spear he has smitten me down on my knees; and they have run on me with one accord. 16:10 He has attacked me with the keen glances of his eyes; with his sharp spear he has smitten me down on my knees; and they have run on me with one accord.

11 God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.

16:11 For the Lord has delivered me into the hands of unrighteous men, and thrown me on the ungodly. 16:11 For the Lord has delivered me into the hands of unrighteous men, and thrown me on the ungodly.

12 I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

16:12 When I was at peace he distracted me: he took me by the hair of the head, and plucked it out: he set me up as a mark. 16:12 When I was at peace he distracted me: he took me by the hair of the head, and plucked it out: he set me up as a mark.

13 His archers surround me all around, he clings my insides asunder, and doesn't spare; he pours out my gall on the ground.

16:13 They surrounded me with spears, aiming at my insides: without sparing me they poured out my gall on the ground. 16:13 They surrounded me with spears, aiming at my insides: without sparing me they poured out my gall on the ground.

14 He breaks me with breach on breach, he runs on me like a giant.

16:14 They overthrew me with fall on fall: they ran on me in their might. 16:14 They overthrew me with fall on fall: they ran on me in their might.

15 I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.

16:15 They sewed sackcloth on my skin, and my strength has been spent on the ground. 16:15 They sewed sackcloth on my skin, and my strength has been spent on the ground.

16 My face is foul with weeping, and my eyelids is the shadow of death;

16:16 My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids. 16:16 My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids.

17 Not for any injustice in my hands: also my prayer is pure.

16:17 Yet there was no injustice in my hands, and my prayer is pure. 16:17 Yet there was no injustice in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

18 Oh earth, don't cover you my blood, and let my cry have no place.

16:18 Earth, don't cover over the blood of my flesh, and let my cry have no place. 16:18 Earth, don't cover over the blood of my flesh, and let my cry have no place.

19 Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.

16:19 And now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. 16:19 And now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high.

20 My friends scorn me; but my eye pours out tears to God.

16:20 Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let my eye weep before him. 16:20 Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let my eye weep before him.

21 Oh that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbour!

16:21 Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even as the son of man with his neighbour! 16:21 Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even as the son of man with his neighbour!

22 When a few years are come, then I shall go the way from where I shall not return.

16:22 But my years are numbered and their end come, and I shall go by the way by which I shall not return. 16:22 But my years are numbered and their end come, and I shall go by the way by which I shall not return.
