Chapter 12
Abram Journeys to Egypt
| 1 And the Lord said to Abram, "Go out from your land, and from your kindred, and from the house of your father, into the land which I shall show you. 2 And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you and magnify your name, and you shall be blessed. 3 And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse; and in you shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed." |
| 4 And Abram went, just as the Lord spoke to him, and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy-five years old when he went out from Charran. 5 And Abram took Sara his wife, and Lot the son of his brother, and all their possessions, as many as they had acquired, and every soul they had acquired in Charran; and they went out to go into the land of Canaan, and they came into the land of Canaan. 6 And Abram traveled through the land in its length as far as the place of Sychem, to the high oak; and the Canaanites then inhabited the land. 7 And the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, "To your seed I will give this land." And Abram built an altar there to the Lord who appeared to him. 8 And he departed from there to the mountain east of Bethel and pitched his tent there, Bethel toward the sea (west) and Aggai (Ai) toward the east; and he built an altar there to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord. 9 And Abram removed and, proceeding, encamped in the wilderness. |
| 10 And there was a famine upon the land, and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there, because the famine prevailed upon the land. 11 And it happened when Abram drew near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sara his wife, "I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance. 12 It shall be, therefore, that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife,' and they will kill me, but they will keep you alive. 13 Say therefore, 'I am his sister,' so that it may be well with me because of you, and my soul shall live for your sake." |
| 14 And it happened when Abram entered into Egypt, the Egyptians saw the woman that she was exceedingly beautiful. 15 And the princes of Pharaoh saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, and they led her into the house of Pharaoh. 16 And they treated Abram well because of her, and he acquired sheep, and calves, and donkeys, male and female servants, mules, and camels. 17 And God afflicted Pharaoh with great and evil plagues, and his house, concerning Sara, the wife of Abram. 18 And Pharaoh, having called Abram, said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not report to me that she is your wife? 19 Why did you say, 'She is my sister'? And I took her for myself as a wife. Now therefore, behold your wife before you; take her and run away!" 20 And Pharaoh commanded men concerning Abram to send him away together with his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him. |
