Chapter 34
Jacob's Sons and Dinah
1 And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to learn about the daughters of the local people. 2 And Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the land, saw her; and taking her, he lay with her and humbled (violated) her. 3 And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden and spoke to the heart of the maiden. 4 And Shechem spoke to Hamor his father, saying, "Take this young girl for me as a wife." 5 And Jacob heard that the son of Hamor had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they arrived. 6 And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field; and when they heard, the men were pierced to the heart, and it was very' grievous to them because he had done a shameful thing in Israel by lying with the daughter of Jacob, and such a thing ought not to be. 8 And Hamor spoke to them, saying, "The soul of Shechem my son has set its heart on your daughter; give her to him, then, as a wife. 9 Intermarry with us; give your daughters to us and take our daughters for your sons. 10 And dwell among us, and behold, the land is wide before you; dwell and trade in it and acquire possessions in it." 11 And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your sight, and whatever you say, we will give. 12 Increase the dowry greatly, and I will give whatever you tell me, only give me this girl as a wife."
13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and they spoke to them because they had defiled Dinah their sister. 14 And Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah and sons of Leah, said to them, "We will not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin; for that is a reproach to us. 15 Only on this condition will we become like you and dwell among you: if you become as we are, and every male among you is circumcised. 16 Then we will give our daughters to you and take from your daughters as wives for ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one race. 17 But if you do not listen to us regarding circumcision, we will take our daughters and depart." 18 And the words pleased Hamor and Shechem the son of Hamor. 19 And the young man did not delay to do this thing, for he was devoted to the daughter of Jacob; and he was the most distinguished of all in his father's house. 20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying, 21 "These men are peaceful with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is wide before them. We will take their daughters as wives for ourselves and give our daughters to them. 22 Only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us so as to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised, just as they are circumcised. 23 And will not their livestock and their possessions and their four-footed animals be ours? Only let us agree with them in this, and they will dwell with us." 24 And all those who went out of the gate of their city listened to Hamor and Shechem his son, and they circumcised the flesh of their foreskin, every male.
31  οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, ἀλλ' ὡσεὶ πόρνῃ χρήσωνται τῇ ἀδελφῇ ἡμῶν; 25 And it happened on the third day, when they were in pain, the two sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, each took his sword and entered the city securely and killed every male. 26 Both Hamor and Shechem his son they killed with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah from the house of Shechem and went out. 27 And the sons of Jacob came upon the wounded and plundered the city in which they had defiled Dinah their sister. 28 And their sheep and their oxen and their donkeys, both what was in the city and what was in the field, they took. 29 And all their bodies and all their belongings and their wives they took captive, and they plundered everything that was in the city and in the houses. 30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have made me hated so as to be evil to all the inhabitants of the land, both the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few in number, and if they gather against me, they will cut me down, and I and my house shall be destroyed." 31 But they said, "Should they treat our sister like a harlot?"
