Chapter 35
Jacob Moves to Bethel
| 1 And God said to Jacob, "Rise up, go up to the place Bethel and dwell there; and make there an altar to the God who appeared to you when you were fleeing from the face of Esau your brother." 2 And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Remove the foreign gods that are with you from among you, and purify yourselves and change your garments; 3 and let us rise and go up to Bethel, and let us make there an altar to the God who heard me in the day of my affliction, who was with me and saved me in the way in which I traveled." 4 And they gave to Jacob the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree in Shechem and got rid of them until this very day. 5 And Israel departed from Shechem, and a terror from God came upon the cities round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Israel. 6 And Jacob came to Luz (which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel), he and all the people who were with him. 7 And he built an altar there and called the name of the place Bethel; for there God had appeared to him when he was fleeing from the face of Esau his brother. |
| 8 And Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried below Bethel under the oak; and Jacob called its name "Oak of Mourning." |
Jacob Is Named Israel
| 9 And God appeared to Jacob again in Luz, when he had come out of Mesopotamia of Syria, and God blessed him. 10 And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; you shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." 11 And God said to him, "I am your God; increase and multiply; nations and gatherings of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come forth from your loins. 12 And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I have given it to you; it shall be yours, and to your offspring after you I will give this land." 13 And God went up from him from the place where He had spoken with him. 14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering upon it and poured oil upon it. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him there, Bethel. |
21 | 16 [And Jacob departed from Bethel and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Gader.] And it happened when he drew near to Chabratha to enter the land of Ephratha, Rachel gave birth, and she suffered hard labor in her childbearing. 17 And it happened during her hard labor that the midwife said to her, "Take courage, for this also is a son for you." 18 And it happened as she was giving up her soul—for she was dying—she called his name "Son of my pain"; but his father called him Benjamin. 19 And Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephratha (this is Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set up a pillar upon her monument; this is the pillar of Rachel's monument until this very day. 21 And it happened while Israel dwelt in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, the concubine of his father Jacob; and Israel heard of it, [...][1] |
[1]In the original Hebrew Masoretic Text, there is a literal gap or space in the middle of this verse. This is known as a Piska Be’emsa Pasuk. The Greek Septuagint (LXX) actually "fills in" the reaction that is missing in the Hebrew, adding the phrase: "and it appeared evil in his sight" (kai ponēron ephanē enantion autou).
The Sons of Israel
οὗτοι υἱοὶ Ἰακώβ, οἳ ἐγένοντο αὐτῷ ἐν Μεσοποταμίᾳ τῆς Συρίας | 22 And it happened while Israel dwelt in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, the concubine of his father Jacob; and Israel heard of it, and it appeared evil in his sight. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve. 23 Sons of Leah: Jacob's firstborn Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun. 24 Sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 25 Sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maid: Dan and Naphtali. 26 Sons of Zilpah, Leah's maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria. |
| 27 And Jacob came to Isaac his father at Mamre, to the city of the plain (this is Hebron) in the land of Canaan, where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned. 28 And the days of Isaac which he lived were one hundred and eighty years. 29 And Isaac, failing, died and was added to his kin, old and full of days; and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him. |
