Chapter 43
The Return to Egypt
1  Ὁ δὲ λιμὸς ἐνίσχυσεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. 2  ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα συνετέλεσαν καταφαγεῖν τὸν σῖτον, ὃν ἤνεγκαν ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ πατὴρ αὐτῶν, Πάλιν πορευθέντες πρίασθε ἡμῖν μικρὰ βρώματα. 3  εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἰούδας λέγων, διαμαρτυρίᾳ Διαμεμαρτύρηται ἡμῖν ὁ ἄνθρωπος λέγων, Οὐκ ὄψεσθε τὸ πρόσωπόν μου, ἐὰν μὴ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ὁ νεώτερος μεθ' ὑμῶν ᾖ. 4  εἰ μὲν οὖν ἀποστέλλεις τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν μεθ' ἡμῶν, καταβησόμεθα καὶ ἀγοράσωμέν σοί βρώματα· 5  εἰ δὲ μὴ ἀποστέλλεις τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν, μεθ' ἡμῶν, οὐ πορευσόμεθα· ὁ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος εἶπεν ἡμῖν λέγων, Οὐκ ὄψεσθέ μου τὸ πρόσωπον, ἐὰν μὴ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ὁ νεώτερος μεθ' ὑμῶν ᾖ. 6  εἶπεν δὲ Ἰσραήλ, Τί ἐκακοποιήσατέ με ἀναγγείλαντες τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ εἰ ἔστιν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός; 7  οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, Ἐρωτῶν ἐπηρώτησεν ἡμᾶς ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ τὴν γενεὰν ἡμῶν λέγων, Εἰ ἔτι ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ζῇ; εἰ ἔστιν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός; καὶ ἀπηγγείλαμεν αὐτῷ κατὰ τὴν ἐπερώτησιν ταύτην. μὴ ᾔδειμεν εἰ ἐρεῖ ἡμῖν, ἀγάγετε τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν; 8  εἶπεν δὲ Ἰούδας πρὸς Ἰσραὴλ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ, Ἀπόστειλον τὸ παιδάριον μετ' ἐμοῦ, καὶ ἀναστάντες πορευσόμεθα, ἵνα ζῶμεν καὶ μὴ ἀποθάνωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς καὶ σὺ καὶ ἡ ἀποσκευὴ ἡμῶν. 9  ἐγὼ δὲ ἐκδέχομαι αὐτόν, ἐκ χειρός μου ζήτησον αὐτόν· ἐὰν μὴ ἀγάγω αὐτὸν πρὸς σὲ καὶ στήσω αὐτὸν ἐναντίον σου, ἡμαρτηκὼς ἔσομαι πρὸς σὲ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας. 10  εἰ μὴ γὰρ ἐβραδύναμεν, ἤδη ἄν ὑπεστρέψαμεν δίς. 11  εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰσραὴλ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτῶν Εἰ οὕτως ἐστίν, τοῦτο ποιήσατε· λάβετε ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις ὑμῶν καὶ καταγάγετε τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ δῶρα, τῆς ῥητίνης καὶ τοῦ μέλιτος, θυμίαμα καὶ στακτὴν καὶ τερέμινθον καὶ κάρυα. 12  καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον δισσὸν λάβετε ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν ὑμῶν· τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ ἀποστραφὲν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ὑμῶν· ἀποστρέψατε μεθ' ὑμῶν μήποτε ἀγνόημά ἐστιν. 13  καὶ τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν λάβετε καὶ ἀναστάντες κατάβητε πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον. 14  ὁ δὲ θεός μου δῴη ὑμῖν χάριν ἐναντίον τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, καὶ ἀποστείλαι τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν τὸν ἕνα καὶ τὸν Βενιαμὶν ἐγὼ μὲν γάρ, καθὰ ἠτέκνωμαι, ἠτέκνωμαι. 1 And the famine prevailed upon the land. 2 And it happened when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go again, buy for us a little food." 3 But Judah spoke to him, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, saying, 'You shall not see my face unless your youngest brother is with you.' 4 If, therefore, you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you; 5 but if you do not send our brother with us, we will not go; for the man said to us, 'You shall not see my face unless your youngest brother is with you.'" 6 And Israel said, "Why did you deal so ill with me as to tell the man that you had another brother?" 7 And they said, "The man strictly questioned us and our family, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?' and we reported to him according to this questioning. Could we have known that he would say to us, 'Bring your brother down'?" 8 And Judah said to Israel his father, "Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and our possessions. 9 I myself will stand as surety for him; from my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, I shall be a sinner against you for all my days. 10 For if we had not delayed, we would have returned twice already." 11 And Israel their father said to them, "If it must be so, do this: take from the fruits of the land in your vessels and carry down gifts to the man: some resin and honey, incense and stacte, terebinth and nuts. 12 And take double the money in your hands; the money that was returned in your sacks, return it with you—perhaps it was an oversight. 13 And take your brother, and arise and go down to the man. 14 And may my God give you favor before the man, that he may send back your other brother and Benjamin. For as for me, as I have been bereaved of children, I am bereaved."
15  Λαβόντες δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες τὰ δῶρα ταῦτα καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον διπλοῦν ἔλαβον ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν καὶ τὸν Βενιαμὶν καὶ ἀναστάντες κατέβησαν εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ ἔστησαν ἐναντίον Ἰωσήφ. 16  εἶδεν δὲ Ἰωσὴφ αὐτοὺς καὶ τὸν Βενιαμὶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν ὁμομήτριον καὶ εἶπεν τῷ ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ Εἰσάγαγε τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ σφάξον θύματα καὶ ἑτοίμασον· μετ' ἐμοῦ γὰρ φάγονται οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἄρτους τὴν μεσημβρίαν. 17  ἐποίησεν δὲ ὁ ἄνθρωπος, καθὰ εἶπεν Ἰωσήφ, καὶ εἰσήγαγεν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ἰωσήφ. — 18  ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ἄνθρωποι ὅτι εἰσήχθησαν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ἰωσήφ, εἶπαν Διὰ τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ ἀποστραφὲν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ἡμῶν τὴν ἀρχὴν ἡμεῖς εἰσαγόμεθα τοῦ συκοφαντῆσαι ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπιθέσθαι ἡμῖν τοῦ λαβεῖν ἡμᾶς εἰς παῖδας καὶ τοὺς ὄνους ἡμῶν. 15 And the men took these gifts, and they took double the money in their hands, and Benjamin; and they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. 16 And Joseph saw them and Benjamin, his brother from the same mother, and he said to the one over his house, "Bring the men into the house, and slaughter animals and prepare them; for the men will eat bread with me at noon." 17 And the man did as Joseph said, and he brought the men into the house of Joseph. 18 And the men, seeing that they were brought into the house of Joseph, said, "Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the beginning we are being brought in, so that he may bring a false charge against us and fall upon us, to take us as slaves and our donkeys too."
Joseph Sees Benjamin
19  προσελθόντες δὲ πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ οἴκου Ἰωσὴφ ἐλάλησαν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ πυλῶνι τοῦ οἴκου 20  λέγοντες Δεόμεθα κύριε· κατέβημεν τὴν ἀρχὴν πρίασθαι βρώματα· 21  ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἤλθομεν εἰς τὸ καταλῦσαι καὶ ἠνοίξαμεν τοὺς μαρσίππους ἡμῶν, καὶ τόδε τὸ ἀργύριον ἑκάστου ἐν τῷ μαρσίππῳ αὐτοῦ· τὸ ἀργύριον ἡμῶν ἐν σταθμῷ ἀπεστρέψαμεν νῦν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν ἡμῶν 22  καὶ ἀργύριον ἕτερον ἠνέγκαμεν μεθ' ἑαυτῶν ἀγοράσαι βρώματα· οὐκ οἴδαμεν, τίς ἐνέβαλεν τὸ ἀργύριον εἰς τοὺς μαρσίππους ἡμῶν. 23  εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἵλεως ὑμῖν, μὴ φοβεῖσθε· ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν καὶ ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν ἔδωκεν ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ὑμῶν, τὸ δὲ ἀργύριον ὑμῶν εὐδοκιμοῦν ἀπέχω. καὶ ἐξήγαγεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν Συμεὼν 24  καὶ ἤνεγκεν ὕδωρ νίψαι τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ ἔδωκεν χορτάσματα τοῖς ὄνοις αὐτῶν. 25  ἡτοίμασαν δὲ τὰ δῶρα ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν Ἰωσὴφ μεσημβρίας· ἤκουσαν γὰρ ὅτι ἐκεῖ μέλλει ἀριστᾶν. 26  Εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Ἰωσὴφ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ τὰ δῶρα, ἃ εἶχον ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν, εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν. 27  ἠρώτησεν δὲ αὐτούς Πῶς ἔχετε καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Εἰ ὑγιαίνει ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ πρεσβύτερος, ὃν εἴπατε; ἔτι ζῇ; 28  οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ὑγιαίνει ὁ παῖς σου ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν, ἔτι ζῇ. καὶ εἶπεν Εὐλογητὸς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος τῷ θεῷ. καὶ κύψαντες προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ. 29  ἀναβλέψας δὲ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς Ἰωσὴφ εἶδεν Βενιαμὶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν ὁμομήτριον καὶ εἶπεν Οὗτος ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ὁ νεώτερος, ὃν εἴπατε πρός με ἀγαγεῖν; καὶ εἶπεν Ὁ θεὸς ἐλεήσαι σε, τέκνον. 30  ἐταράχθη δὲ Ἰωσήφ — συνεστρέφετο γὰρ τὰ ἐζήτει αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ — καὶ ἐζήτει κλαῦσαι· εἰσελθὼν δὲ εἰς τὸ ταμιεῖον ἔκλαυσεν ἐκεῖ. 19 And they approached the man who was over the house of Joseph and spoke to him at the gateway of the house, 20 saying, "We beg you, lord; we came down at the beginning to buy food. 21 And it happened when we came to the lodging place and opened our sacks, behold, each man’s money was in his sack; our money in full weight we have now returned in our hands. 22 And other money we have brought with us to buy food; we do not know who put the money into our sacks." 23 And he said to them, "Peace be to you, do not fear; your God and the God of your fathers has given you treasures in your sacks, and I have received your money in good order." And he brought Simeon out to them. 24 And he brought water to wash their feet and gave fodder to their donkeys. 25 And they prepared the gifts until Joseph came at noon; for they heard that he was going to dine there. 26 And Joseph entered the house, and they brought to him the gifts which they had in their hands into the house and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground. 27 And he asked them, "How are you?" and said to them, "Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?" 28 And they said, "Your servant our father is well, he is still alive." And he [Joseph] said, "Blessed is that man by God." And they bowed low and did obeisance to him. 29 And Joseph, looking up with his eyes, saw Benjamin his brother, the son of his own mother, and said, "Is this your youngest brother, whom you spoke of bringing to me?" And he said, "God be merciful to you, child." 30 And Joseph was deeply moved—for his heart yearned for his brother—and he sought a place to weep; and entering into his private chamber, he wept there.
31  καὶ νιψάμενος τὸ πρόσωπον ἐξελθὼν ἐνεκρατεύσατο καὶ εἶπεν Παράθετε ἄρτους. 32  καὶ παρέθηκαν αὐτῷ μόνῳ καὶ αὐτοῖς καθ' ἑαυτοὺς καὶ τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις τοῖς συνδειπνοῦσιν μετ' αὐτοῦ καθ' ἑαυτούς· οὐ γὰρ ἐδύναντο οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι συνεσθίειν μετὰ τῶν Ἑβραίων ἄρτους, βδέλυγμα γάρ ἐστιν τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις. 33  ἐκάθισαν δὲ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ, ὁ πρωτότοκος κατὰ τὰ πρεσβεῖα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ νεώτερος κατὰ τὴν νεότητα αὐτοῦ· ἐξίσταντο δὲ οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ. 34  ἦραν δὲ μερίδας παρ' αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς· ἐμεγαλύνθη δὲ ἡ μερὶς Βενιαμὶν παρὰ τὰς μερίδας πάντων πενταπλασίως πρὸς τὰς ἐκείνων. ἔπιον δὲ καὶ ἐμεθύσθησαν μετ' αὐτοῦ. 31 And having washed his face, he came out and controlled himself and said, "Set out the bread." 32 And they served him by himself and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who dined with him by themselves; for the Egyptians were not able to eat bread with the Hebrews, for it is an abomination to the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the younger according to his youth; and the men were astonished at one another. 34 And portions were carried from him to them; but the portion for Benjamin was magnified five times larger than the portions of any of the others. And they drank and became merry (intoxicated) with him.
