Chapter 48
Israel's Last Days
| 1 And it came to pass after these things that it was reported to Joseph, "Behold, your father is failing (distressed)." And taking his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, he came to Jacob. 2 And it was reported to Jacob, saying, "Behold, your son Joseph comes to you." And Israel, gathering his strength, sat up on his bed. 3 And Jacob said to Joseph, "My God appeared to me in Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, 'Behold, I will increase you and multiply you, and I will make you into assemblies of nations, and I will give this land to you and to your offspring after you for an eternal possession.' 5 Now therefore, your two sons who were born to you in Egypt before I came to you in Egypt are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine just as Reuben and Simeon. 6 But the offspring whom you may beget after these shall be yours; they shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritances. 7 As for me, when I was coming from Mesopotamia of Syria, your mother Rachel died in the land of Canaan, as I was nearing the racecourse of Chabratha on the way to Ephratha; and I buried her there by the road of the racecourse (this is Bethlehem)." |
| 8 And Israel, seeing the sons of Joseph, said, "Who are these to you?" 9 And Joseph said to his father, "They are my sons, whom God gave to me here." And Jacob said, "Bring them to me, that I may bless them." 10 Now the eyes of Israel were heavy from old age, and he was not able to see; and he brought them near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I was not deprived of seeing your face, and behold, God has shown me your offspring as well." 12 And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and they bowed down to him with their faces to the earth. 13 And Joseph took his two sons, Ephraim in his right hand—at the left of Israel—and Manasseh in his left hand—at the right of Israel—and brought them near to him. 14 But Israel, stretching out his right hand, placed it upon the head of Ephraim—though he was the younger—and his left upon the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands. |
| 15 And he blessed them and said, "The God in whose presence my fathers Abraham and Isaac were well-pleasing, the God who has nourished me from my youth until this day, 16 the Angel who delivers me from all evils, bless these children; and may my name be called upon them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase into a great multitude upon the earth." 17 But Joseph, seeing that his father placed his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it appeared wrong to him; and Joseph took hold of his father's hand to remove it from the head of Ephraim to the head of Manasseh. 18 And Joseph said to his father, "Not so, father; for this one is the firstborn; place your right hand upon his head." 19 And he was not willing, but said, "I know, child, I know; he also shall become a people, and he also shall be exalted; but his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations." 20 And he blessed them on that day, saying, "In you shall Israel be blessed, saying: 'May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh';" and he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 And Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I am dying, and God will be with you and will return you to the land of your fathers. 22 And I give to you Shechem as a special portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and my bow." |
