Chapter 49
Israel's Prophecy concerning His Sons
1 And Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather together, that I may announce to you what shall befall you in the last days. 2 Assemble and hear, sons of Jacob; listen to Israel your father. 3 Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength and the beginning of my children, hard to be borne, and hard in self-will. 4 You have broken out in insolence like water; do not boil over; for you went up to the bed of your father; then you defiled the couch where you went up. 5 Simeon and Levi are brothers; they accomplished injustice by their choice. 6 May my soul not come into their counsel, and may my inward parts (liver) not rest upon their assembly; for in their anger they killed men, and in their desire they hamstrung a bull. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it is self-willed, and their wrath, for it was hardened; I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.
8 Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hands shall be upon the back of your enemies; the sons of your father shall bow down to you. 9 Judah is a lion’s whelp; from the sprout, my son, you have gone up; having reclined, you slept like a lion and like a whelp; who shall rouse him? 10 A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until the things laid up for him come, and he is the expectation of the nations. 11 Binding his foal to the vine and the foal of his donkey to the vine-tendril; he shall wash his robe in wine and his garment in the blood of the grape. 12 His eyes are joyful from wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.
13 Zebulun shall dwell by the coast, and he shall be by a harbor for ships, and he shall extend as far as Sidon. 14 Issachar desired that which is good, resting in the midst of the inheritances. 15 And seeing the rest, that it was good, and the land, that it was fertile, he bowed his shoulder to labor and became a tiller of the soil. 16 Dan shall judge his own people as one tribe in Israel. 17 And let Dan be a serpent in the way, lying in wait upon the path, biting the heel of the horse; and the rider shall fall backward. 18 I wait for the salvation of the Lord. 19 Gad, a band of pirates shall raid him, but he shall raid them at their heels. 20 Asher, his bread is fat, and he shall provide delicacies for rulers. 21 Naphtali is a spreading trunk (or hind let loose), yielding beauty in its fruit.
22 Joseph is a son who has increased, a son who has increased and is envied, my youngest son; return to me. 23 Against him they took counsel and reviled him, and the lords of the arrows held a grudge against him; 24 and their bows were shattered with might, and the sinews of the muscles of their hands were loosened by the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob; from there is the one who strengthened Israel. 25 It is from the God of your father, and my God helped you and blessed you with a blessing of heaven from above and a blessing of the earth containing all things; because of the blessing of the breasts and of the womb, 26 the blessings of your father and your mother. It has prevailed over the blessings of the permanent mountains and upon the blessings of the everlasting hills. They shall be upon the head of Joseph and upon the crown of the one who led his brothers. 27 Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he shall still eat, and in the evening he will distribute food."
28 All these are the twelve sons of Jacob, and this is what their father spoke to them; and he blessed them, each according to his own blessing he blessed them. 29 And he said to them, "I am being gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave which is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the double cave (Machpelah) which is opposite Mamre in the land of Canaan, the cave which Abraham acquired from Ephron the Hittite for the possession of a tomb. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebecca his wife; and there I buried Leah. 32 In the possession of the field and the cave that is in it from the sons of Heth." 33 And Jacob ceased giving commands to his sons; and drawing up his feet onto the bed, he passed away and was gathered to his people.
