Chapter 50
The Death of Israel
| 1 And Joseph, falling upon his father's face, wept over him and kissed him. 2 And Joseph commanded his servants, the embalmers, to embalm his father; and the embalmers embalmed Israel. 3 And forty days were completed for him; for so are numbered the days of burial. And Egypt mourned for him seventy days. |
| 4 And when the days of mourning had passed, Joseph spoke to the courtiers of Pharaoh, saying, "If I have found favor in your sight, speak concerning me into the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 'My father made me swear, saying: In the tomb which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me. Now therefore, let me go up and bury my father, and I will return.'" 6 And Pharaoh said, "Go up, bury your father, just as he made you swear." 7 So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 and all the household of Joseph, and his brothers, and all his father’s household; only their kindred and their sheep and their oxen they left in the land of Goshen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and the company was very great. 10 And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lamented him with a very great and powerful lamentation; and he observed a mourning for his father for seven days. 11 And when the inhabitants of the land of Canaan saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a great mourning for the Egyptians." Therefore he called its name "Mourning of Egypt," which is beyond the Jordan. |
Burial at Machpelah
| 12 And his sons did so for him, and they buried him there. 13 And his sons carried him into the land of Canaan and buried him in the double cave (Machpelah), the cave which Abraham had acquired for the possession of a tomb from Ephron the Hittite, opposite Mamre. 14 And Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and those who had gone up with him to bury his father. |
16 καὶ παρεγένοντο πρὸς Ἰωσὴφ λέγοντες, Ὁ πατήρ σου ὥρκισεν πρὸ τοῦ τελευτῆσαι αὐτὸν λέγων, | 15 And when Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "Lest Joseph bear a grudge against us and pay us back in full for all the evils which we showed him." 16 And they came to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave a command before he died, saying: |
| 17 'Thus you shall say to Joseph: Forgive them their injustice and their sin, because they showed you evil things.' And now, accept the injustice of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept while they were speaking to him. 18 And coming to him, they said, "Behold, we are your servants." 19 And Joseph said to them, "Do not fear; for am I of God? 20 You took counsel against me for evil, but God took counsel for me for good, so that it might come to pass as it is today, in order that a great people might be nourished. 21 And he said to them, "Do not fear; I will nourish you and your households." And he comforted them and spoke to their heart. |
Death of Joseph
| 22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his brothers and all the household of his father. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third generation; and the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born upon Joseph’s knees. 24 And Joseph spoke to his brothers, saying, "I am dying; but with a visitation, God will visit you and will lead you up out of this land into the land which God swore to our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." 25 And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, "In the visitation with which God will visit you, you shall also carry up my bones from here with you." 26 And Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and they buried him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt. |
