Jacob Meets Rachel
| 1 And Jacob, lifting up his feet, journeyed to the land of the east, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, and the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau. 2 And he looked, and behold, a well was in the plain, and there were three flocks of sheep resting there by it; for from that well they used to water the flocks, and a great stone was over the mouth of the well. 3 And all the flocks would be gathered there, and they would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and then they would replace the stone over the mouth of the well in its place. |
| 4 And Jacob said to them, "Brothers, where are you from?" And they said, "We are from Haran." 5 And he said to them, "Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him." 6 And he said to them, "Is he well?" And they said, "He is well. And behold, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep." 7 And Jacob said, "Behold, it is still high day; it is not yet time for the livestock to be gathered together. Water the sheep and go out and pasture them." 8 But they said, "We will not be able to until all the shepherds are gathered together and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well; then we will water the sheep." |
καὶ ἦν μετ' αὐτοῦ μῆνα ἡμερῶν.1 | 9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel the daughter of Laban came with her father’s sheep; for she was pasturing her father’s sheep. 10 And it happened, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, Jacob went forward and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of Laban his mother's brother. 11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifting up his voice, he wept. 12 And he announced to Rachel that he was a kinsman of her father and that he was the son of Rebekah; and she ran and told her father according to these words. 13 And it happened, when Laban heard the name of Jacob, his sister's son, he ran to meet him, and having embraced him, he kissed him and led him into his house. And he recounted to Laban all these matters. 14 And Laban said to him, "You are of my bones and of my flesh." And he stayed with him for a month of days. |
| 15 And Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are indeed my kinsman, you shall not serve me for nothing; tell me, what shall your wage be?" 16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 And the eyes of Leah were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and lovely in appearance. |
20 καὶ ἐδούλευσεν Ἰακὼβ περὶ Ῥαχὴλ ἔτη ἑπτά, καὶ ἦσαν ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὡς ἡμέραι ὀλίγαι παρὰ τὸ ἀγαπᾶν αὐτὸν αὐτήν — | 18 And Jacob loved Rachel, and he said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter." 19 And Laban said to him, "It is better for me to give her to you than for me to give her to another man; dwell with me." 20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed in his sight like only a few days because of his love for her. |
Laban's Treachery
εἶπεν δὲ Ἰακώβ, τῷ Λαβὰν τί τοῦτο ἐποίησάς μοι; οὐ περὶ Ῥαχὴλ ἐδούλευσα παρὰ Σοὶ; καὶ ἵνα τί παρελογίσω με; | 21 And Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her." 22 And Laban gathered all the men of the place and made a wedding feast. 23 And it happened in the evening that Laban took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob went in to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her servant. 25 And it happened in the morning, and behold, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?" |
| 26 And Laban said, "It is not the custom in our place to give the younger before the firstborn." 27 "Complete the bridal week of this one, and I will give you the other one also in return for the work which you will serve with me for yet another seven years." 28 And Jacob did so and completed her week; and Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife. 29 And Laban gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her servant. 30 And he went in to Rachel also; and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and he served him yet another seven years. |
| 31 And the Lord, seeing that Leah was hated, opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. 32 And Leah conceived and bore a son to Jacob; and she called his name Reuben, saying, "Because the Lord has seen my humiliation; now my husband will love me." 33 And she conceived again and bore a second son to Jacob and said, "Because the Lord heard that I am hated, He has given me this one also"; and she called his name Simeon. 34 And she conceived again and bore a son and said, "Now at this time my husband will be joined to me, for I have borne him three sons"; therefore she called his name Levi. 35 And she conceived again and bore a son and said, "Now once more I will give thanks to the Lord"; therefore she called his name Judah. And she ceased from bearing. |
