Introduction and Historical Context
1 The word of the Lord, which came to Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel.
The Command and the First Son
2 The beginning of the word of the Lord to Hosea: And the Lord said to Hosea, "Go, take for yourself a wife of whoredom and children of whoredom; because the land will surely commit whoredom, departing from behind the Lord." 3 So he went and took Gomer, daughter of Debelaim; and she conceived and bore him a son. 4 And the Lord said to him, "Call his name Jezreel; because in yet a little while, I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and I will bring to an end the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 And it shall be in that day, I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel."
The Daughter and the Second Son
6 And she conceived again and bore a daughter. And he said to him, "Call her name Not-pitied (Ouk-eleēmene), because I will no longer have mercy on the house of Israel, but will surely set myself in array against them. 7 But I will have mercy on the sons of Judah; and I will save them by the Lord their God, and I will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by war, nor by chariots, nor by horses, nor by horsemen."
8 And she weaned Not-pitied, and she conceived again and bore a son. 9 And he said, "Call his name Not-my-people (Ou-laos-mou), because you are not my people, and I am not yours."
10 And the number of the sons of Israel was as the sand of the sea, which shall not be measured nor numbered; and it shall be, in the place where it was said to them, "You are not my people," there they shall be called sons of the living God. 11 And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel shall be gathered together into one, and they shall appoint for themselves one headship, and they shall go up from the land; because great is the day of Jezreel.
