Psalm 2

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

1 Ἱνατί ἐφρύαξαν ἔθνη, καὶ λαοὶ ἐμελέτησαν κενά; 1 Ἱνατί ἐφρύαξαν ἔθνη, καὶ λαοὶ ἐμελέτησαν κενά;
1 Why did the nations rage, and the people think about vanity? 1 Why did the nations rage, and the people think about vanity?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his anointed, saying,

2 The kings of the land stood up, and the rulers gathered together, against the Lord, and against his anointed; (musical pause) 2 The kings of the land stood up, and the rulers gathered together, against the Lord, and against his anointed; (musical pause)

3 Let’s break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

3 Let’s break through their bonds, and throw away their yoke from us. 3 Let’s break through their bonds, and throw away their yoke from us.

4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

4 He who dwells in the heavens will laugh at them, and the Lord will mock them. 4 He who dwells in the heavens will laugh at them, and the Lord will mock them.

5 Then he shall speak to them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

5 Then he will speak to them in his anger, and agitate them in his wrath. 5 Then he will speak to them in his anger, and agitate them in his wrath.

6 Yet have I set my king on my holy hill of Zion.

6 But I have been made king by him on Siōn his holy mountain, 6 But I have been made king by him on Siōn his holy mountain,

7 I will declare the decree: Yahweh has said to me, You are my Son; this day have I fathered you.

7 proclaiming the instructions of the Lord: the Lord said to me, You are my Son, today I have fathered you. 7 proclaiming the instructions of the Lord: the Lord said to me, You are my Son, today I have fathered you.

8 Ask of me, and I shall give you the heathen for your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

8 Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the land for your possession. 8 Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the land for your possession.

9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; you shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

9 You will rule them with a rod of iron; you will shatter them as a potter’s vessel. 9 You will rule them with a rod of iron; you will shatter them as a potter’s vessel.

10 Be wise now therefore, Oh you kings: be instructed, you judges of the earth.

10 Therefore, you kings, understand; be instructed, all you who judge the earth. 10 Therefore, you kings, understand; be instructed, all you who judge the earth.

11 Serve Yahweh with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice in him with trembling. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice in him with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they who put their trust in him.

12 Accept correction, lest the Lord be angry, and you will be destroyed from the righteous way. whenever his wrath shall be suddenly kindled, blessed are all they who trust in him. 12 Accept correction, lest the Lord be angry, and you will be destroyed from the righteous way. whenever his wrath shall be suddenly kindled, blessed are all they who trust in him.
