The Call to Distinction
| 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 "Speak to the sons of Israel and you shall say to them: 'I am the Lord your God. 3 According to the practices of the land of Egypt, in which you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the practices of the land of Canaan, into which I am leading you, you shall not do; and in their ordinances you shall not walk. 4 My judgments you shall do and My ordinances you shall keep, to walk in them; I am the Lord your God. 5 And you shall keep all My ordinances and all My judgments and do them; for the man who does them shall live by them; I am the Lord your God.'" |
Laws Concerning Incest
| 6 "'No man, no man shall approach any close relative of his flesh to uncover [their] nakedness (aschēmosynēn); I am the Lord. 7 The nakedness of your father and the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover; for she is your mother, and you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8 The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness. 9 The nakedness of your sister, whether from your father or from your mother, born at home or born abroad, you shall not uncover her nakedness. 10 The nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, you shall not uncover their nakedness, for it is your own nakedness. 11 The nakedness of the daughter of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; she is your sister by the same father, you shall not uncover her nakedness. |
| 12 The nakedness of your father’s sister you shall not uncover, for she is a close relative of your father. 13 The nakedness of your mother’s sister you shall not uncover, for she is a close relative of your mother. 14 The nakedness of your father’s brother you shall not uncover, and to his wife you shall not approach; for she is your kinswoman. 15 The nakedness of your daughter-in-law you shall not uncover; for she is your son’s wife, you shall not uncover her nakedness. 16 The nakedness of your brother’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your brother’s nakedness. 17 The nakedness of a woman and her daughter you shall not uncover; the daughter of her son and the daughter of her daughter you shall not take to uncover their nakedness; for they are your close relatives—it is an act of impiety. 18 And you shall not take a woman as a rival to her sister, to uncover her nakedness while her sister is still living.'" |
Other Forbidden Sexual Practices and Idolatry
| 19 "'And to a woman in her period of uncleanness you shall not approach to uncover her nakedness. 20 And to the wife of your neighbor you shall not give your emission of seed to be defiled with her. 21 And of your seed you shall not give to serve the Ruler (archonti—often associated with Molech), and you shall not profane My holy name; I am the Lord. 22 And with a male you shall not lie as with a woman; for it is an abomination. 23 And with any four-footed animal you shall not give your emission to be defiled by it, and a woman shall not stand before any four-footed animal to be mounted; for it is a monstrous thing (myseron).'" |
The Warning of the Land’s Judgment
26 καὶ φυλάξεσθε πάντα τὰ νόμιμά μου καὶ πάντα τὰ προστάγματά μου καὶ οὐ ποιήσετε ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν βδελυγμάτων τούτων, ὁ ἐγχώριος καὶ ὁ προσγενόμενος προσήλυτος ἐν ὑμῖν· 27 πάντα γὰρ τὰ βδελύγματα ταῦτα ἐποίησαν οἱ ἄνθρωποι τῆς γῆς οἱ ὄντες πρότεροι ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐμιάνθη ἡ γῆ· | 24 "'Do not defile yourselves in any of these things; for in all these things the nations were defiled, which I am casting out from before your face. 25 And the land was defiled, and I have repaid their injustice to them because of it, and the land has become weary of those dwelling upon it. 26 But you shall keep all My ordinances and all My judgments, and you shall not do any of these abominations—neither the native-born nor the stranger residing among you. 27 For all these abominations the men of the land did who were before you, and the land was defiled. |
| 28 And so, let the land not be weary of you when you defile it, in the same way it was weary of the nations that were before you. 29 For everyone who does any of these abominations—the souls who do them shall be destroyed from among their people. 30 And you shall keep My ordinances, so that you do not do any of the abominable customs which were practiced before you, and you shall not be defiled by them; for I am the Lord your God.'" |
