Chapter 1
Greeting
1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Encouragement in the Face of Persecution
3We are obligated to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters, as is fitting, because your faith is flourishing beyond measure and the love of every single one of you for each other is overflowing. 4As a result, we ourselves boast about you among the churches of God for your endurance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions that you are bearing. 5This is a clear token of the righteous judgment of God, intended for you to be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are indeed suffering.
The Revelation of Divine Justice
6For it is indeed righteous in God’s sight to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7and to give relief to you who are being afflicted, along with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his powerful angels 8in a flame of fire. He will execute vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might, 10when He comes on that day to be glorified in His saints and to be marveled at among all who have believed—because our testimony to you was believed.
Prayer for Continued Faithfulness
11To this end, we also pray for you always, that our God may consider you worthy of His calling and may fulfill every desire for goodness and every work of faith by His power, 12so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
