Chapter 2
The Great Apostasy and the Man of Lawlessness
1Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to meet Him, 2that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be alarmed—whether by a spirit or by a word or by a letter allegedly from us—to the effect that the Day of the Lord has already come. 3Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. 4He is the one who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he seats himself in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.
5Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I used to tell you these things? 6And now you know what is restraining him, so that he may be revealed in his own time. 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only the one who restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will consume with the breath of His mouth and render powerless by the appearance of His coming.
9The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, 10and with every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. 11For this reason, God sends them a working of delusion so that they will believe the lie, 12in order that all may be judged who did not believe the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness.
Standing Firm in the Truth
13But we are obligated to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through the sanctification of the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14To this He called you through our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions which you were taught, whether by our word or by our letter.
