Chapter 3
A Request for Prayer and Promise of Protection
1Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it was among you, 2and that we may be rescued from perverse and evil people; for not everyone possesses the faith. 3But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. 4And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the endurance of Christ.
The Problem of Idleness
6Now we command you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from every brother who is walking in an undisciplined way and not according to the tradition which they received from us. 7For you yourselves know how it is necessary to imitate us, because we were not undisciplined among you, 8nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it. Instead, in labor and hardship, working night and day, we did so as not to be a burden to any of you; 9not because we do not have the right, but so that we might offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10For even when we were with you, we used to give you this command: “If anyone is not willing to work, neither let him eat.”
11For we hear that some among you are walking in an undisciplined way—not working at all, but being busybodies. 12Now to such people we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ that, working with quietness, they eat their own bread. 13But as for you, brothers and sisters, do not lose heart in doing what is good. 14If anyone does not obey our word in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he may be put to shame. 15And yet, do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.
Final Benediction and Authentication
16Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.
17The greeting is in my own hand—Paul’s. This is the sign of authenticity in every letter; this is how I write. 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
