Chapter 1
Salutation
1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2to Timothy, my genuine child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Warning Against False Doctrine
3Just as I urged you to remain in Ephesus when I was going to Macedonia, stay there so that you may command certain people not to teach strange doctrines 4nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship of God that is by faith. 5But the goal of our command is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. 6Some have missed the mark in these things and have turned aside to empty talk, 7wanting to be teachers of the law, yet not understanding either what they are saying or the matters about which they make such confident assertions.
The Proper Use of the Law
8Now we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9knowing this: that the law is not laid down for a righteous person, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10for the sexually immoral, for men who practice homosexuality, for slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching, 11according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, with which I was entrusted.
Paul’s Experience of Mercy
12I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, appointing me to ministry, 13though formerly I was a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an arrogant aggressor. But I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14and the grace of our Lord super-abounded with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15The saying is trustworthy and worthy of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—of whom I am the foremost. 16But for this reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might demonstrate His perfect patience as a model for those who were going to believe in Him for eternal life. 17Now to the King of the ages, imperishable, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Timothy’s Charge
18This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight, 19holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and thereby suffered shipwreck regarding their faith. 20Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.
