Chapter 5
The Day of the Lord and the Need for Vigilance
1Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. 2For you yourselves know accurately that the Day of the Lord is coming just like a thief in the night. 3When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction comes upon them like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will certainly not escape. 4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, so that the day should overtake you like a thief; 5for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So then, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and be sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. 9For God did not appoint us for wrath, but for the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep, we might live together with Him. 11Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are already doing.
Life Within the Community
12But we ask you, brothers and sisters, to recognize those who labor among you and who lead you in the Lord and admonish you, 13and to regard them beyond all measure in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14And we urge you, brothers and sisters: Admonish the undisciplined, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15See to it that no one repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for one another and for all.
Constant Devotion and Spiritual Discernment
16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in every circumstance; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise prophecies. 21But test all things; hold fast to what is good. 22Abstain from every form of evil.
Final Blessing and Greeting
23Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us also.
26Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. 27I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brothers and sisters.
28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
