Chapter 3
Qualifications for Overseers
1This saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble work. 2Therefore, it is necessary for the overseer to be irreproachable, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach; 3not a drunkard, not a violent man but gentle, not contentious, not a lover of money. 4He must manage his own household well, keeping his children in submission with all dignity 5(for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of God’s church?). 6He must not be a new convert, so that he does not become conceited and fall into the same judgment as the devil. 7Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among those on the outside, so that he does not fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.
Qualifications for Deacons
8Deacons, likewise, must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain, 9holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10And let these also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. 11Women, likewise, must be dignified, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12Let deacons be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 13For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
The Mystery of Godliness
14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you soon; 15but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how it is necessary to conduct oneself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16And by common confession, great is the mystery of godliness:
He was revealed in the flesh,
Was vindicated in the Spirit,
Was seen by angels,
Was proclaimed among the nations,
Was believed on in the world,
Was taken up in glory.
