Chapter 8
The Example of the Macedonians
| 1Now we want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia. 2For in a severe test of affliction, the abundance of their joy and their deep-down poverty overflowed into the wealth of their sincere generosity. 3For I testify that according to their ability, and even beyond their ability, they gave of their own accord, 4begging us with much entreaty for the favor of participating in the ministry to the saints. 5And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us by the will of God. 6So we urged Titus that, just as he had started this earlier, he should also complete this act of grace among you. 7But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in the love we have sparked in you—see that you also excel in this act of grace. |
The Theology of Giving
|
8I am not saying this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love by comparison with the earnestness of others.
9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.
10And I give my opinion in this matter: this is profitable for you, since you were the first not only to act but also to desire to do this a year ago.
11Now finish doing it, so that your readiness to desire it may be matched by your completion of it, according to what you have.
12For if the readiness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.
13For it is not that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but as a matter of equality.
14At the present time your abundance supplies their need, so that their abundance may also supply your need, so that there may be equality.
15As it is written:
“The one who gathered much did not have too much,
and the one who gathered little did not have too little.” {Ex. 16:18} |
The Commendation of Titus and His Companions
| 16But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same earnestness for you. 17For he not only accepted our appeal, but being very earnest himself, he is going to you of his own accord. 18And we are sending with him the brother whose praise in the gospel is known through all the churches. 19And not only that, but he has also been appointed by the churches to travel with us in this work of grace that is being administered by us for the glory of the Lord Himself and to show our readiness. 20We are taking this precaution so that no one should find fault with us in the way we administer this generous gift. 21For we intend to do what is honorable, not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of people. 22And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many things, but who is now much more earnest because of his great confidence in you. 23As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker for you; as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24Therefore, show the proof of your love and of our boasting about you to these men in the presence of the churches. |
