Chapter 3
Spiritual Infancy and Factionalism
1 Κἀγώ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἠδυνήθην λαλῆσαι ὑμῖν ὡς πνευματικοῖς ἀλλ' ὡς σαρκίνοις, ὡς νηπίοις ἐν Χριστῷ. 2 γάλα ὑμᾶς ἐπότισα, οὐ βρῶμα· οὔπω γὰρ ἐδύνασθε. ἀλλ' οὐδὲ ἔτι νῦν δύνασθε, 3 ἔτι γὰρ σαρκικοί ἐστε. ὅπου γὰρ ἐν ὑμῖν ζῆλος καὶ ἔρις, οὐχὶ σαρκικοί ἐστε καὶ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον περιπατεῖτε; 4 ὅταν γὰρ λέγῃ τις, Ἐγὼ μέν εἰμι Παύλου, ἕτερος δὲ, Ἐγὼ Ἀπολλῶ, οὐκ ἄνθρωποί ἐστε;
1But I, brothers and sisters, was not able to speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh—as infants in Christ. 2I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, for you were not yet capable of it. Why, even now you are still not capable, 3for you are still fleshly. For where there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and walking according to merely human standards? 4For when someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not behaving like mere humans?
5What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God was the one causing the growth. 7So then, neither the one who plants is anything, nor the one who waters, but only God who causes the growth. 8The one who plants and the one who waters are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9For we are God’s coworkers; you are God’s field, God’s building.
The Foundation and the Fire
10According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. But let each person take care how he builds upon it. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13the work of each will become evident; for the Day will disclose it, because it is revealed by fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each person’s work. 14If the work that someone has built remains, he will receive a reward. 15If someone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through fire.
16Do you not know that you all are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him; for the temple of God is holy, which is what you are.
True Wisdom and Divine Ownership
|
18Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become a “fool” so that he may become truly wise.
19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. For it is written:
He catches the wise in their own craftiness.
{Job 5:13}
20And again:
The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless.
{Ps. 94:11}
|
21So then, let no one boast in human leaders. For all things belong to you— 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or the present or the future—all things belong to you, 23and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
