Chapter 4
Servants of Christ
Stewards of the Mysteries
1This is how a person should regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2In this regard, what is ultimately required of stewards is that one be found faithful. 3But to me, it is a very small matter that I should be examined by you or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. 4For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; the one who examines me is the Lord. 5Therefore, do not pass judgment before the right time—wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light the things hidden in darkness and will reveal the intentions of hearts; and then each person’s praise will come from God.
Apostolic Humility vs. Corinthian Pride
6Now I have applied these things, brothers and sisters, to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that by observing us you may learn the rule: “Nothing beyond what is written,” so that no one of you becomes inflated with pride for one leader against the other. 7For who makes you different from anyone else? And what do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you hadn’t? 8Already you are satiated! Already you have become rich! Without us, you have become kings! I wish you really had become kings, so that we might reign with you.
9For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display last of all, like men condemned to die in the arena; for we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to humans. 10We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are dishonored! 11To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are poorly clothed, we are roughly treated, and we are homeless. 12We wear ourselves out working with our own hands. When we are slandered, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; 13when we are defamed, we speak kindly. We have become like the scum of the earth, the refuse of all things, even until now.
A Father’s Admonition
14 Οὐκ ἐντρέπων ὑμᾶς γράφω ταῦτα ἀλλ' ὡς τέκνα μου ἀγαπητὰ νουθετῶν. 15 ἐὰν γὰρ μυρίους παιδαγωγοὺς ἔχητε ἐν Χριστῷ ἀλλ' οὐ πολλοὺς πατέρας· ἐν γὰρ Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ διὰ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ἐγὼ ὑμᾶς ἐγέννησα. 16 Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς, μιμηταί μου γίνεσθε. 17 διὰ τοῦτο ἔπεμψα ὑμῖν Τιμόθεον, ὃς ἐστίν μου τέκνον ἀγαπητὸν καὶ πιστὸν ἐν κυρίῳ, ὃς ὑμᾶς ἀναμνήσει τὰς ὁδούς μου τὰς ἐν Χριστῷ [Ἰησοῦ], καθὼς πανταχοῦ ἐν πάσῃ ἐκκλησίᾳ διδάσκω. 18 Ὡς μὴ ἐρχομένου δέ μου πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐφυσιώθησάν τινες· 19 ἐλεύσομαι δὲ ταχέως πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐὰν ὁ κύριος θελήσῃ, καὶ γνώσομαι οὐ τὸν λόγον τῶν πεφυσιωμένων ἀλλὰ τὴν δύναμιν· 20 οὐ γὰρ ἐν λόγῳ ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ ἀλλ' ἐν δυνάμει. 21 τί θέλετε; ἐν ῥάβδῳ ἔλθω πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἢ ἐν ἀγάπῃ πνεύματί τε πραΰτητος;
14I am not writing these things to shame you, but to warn you as my beloved children. 15For even if you were to have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus, through the gospel, I became your father. 16Therefore, I urge you: become imitators of me. 17This is why I sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord; he will remind you of my ways in Christ Jesus, just as I teach everywhere in every church. 18Some have become arrogant, acting as if I were not coming to you. 19But I will come to you quickly, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people, but their power. 20For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk, but in power. 21What do you prefer? Should I come to you with a rod of discipline, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?
