Chapter 5
Judgment on an Incestuous Relationship
1It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such immorality as does not exist even among the Gentiles—that someone has his father’s wife. 2And you are puffed up! Should you not instead have mourned, so that the one who did this deed might be removed from your midst? 3For though I am absent in body, I am present in spirit; and I have already passed judgment, as if I were present, on the one who has done this thing. 4When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus, and my spirit is with you along with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5you are to hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
6Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough? 7Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new batch, just as you are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8Therefore, let us keep the festival, not with old leaven—the leaven of malice and wickedness—but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Sexual Immorality and Church Discipline
9 Ἔγραψα ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ ἐπιστολῇ μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι πόρνοις, 10 οὐ πάντως τοῖς πόρνοις τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἢ τοῖς πλεονέκταις καὶ ἅρπαξιν ἢ εἰδωλολάτραις, ἐπεὶ ὠφείλετε ἄρα ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου ἐξελθεῖν. 11 νῦν δὲ ἔγραψα ὑμῖν μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι ἐάν τις ἀδελφὸς ὀνομαζόμενος ᾖ πόρνος ἢ πλεονέκτης ἢ εἰδωλολάτρης ἢ λοίδορος ἢ μέθυσος ἢ ἅρπαξ, τῷ τοιούτῳ μηδὲ συνεσθίειν. 12 τί γάρ μοι τοὺς ἔξω κρίνειν; οὐχὶ τοὺς ἔσω ὑμεῖς κρίνετε; 13 τοὺς δὲ ἔξω ὁ θεὸς κρινεῖ. ἐξάρατε τὸν πονηρὸν ἐξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν. {Deut. 17:7}
9I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would literally have to leave the world. 11But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a “brother” if he is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12For what business is it of mine to judge those outside? Is it not those inside whom you are to judge? 13God will judge those outside. “Remove the evil person from among yourselves.” {Deut. 17:7}
