Chapter 8
Knowledge vs. Love Regarding Idol Food
1Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that “we all have knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2If anyone thinks he has known something, he has not yet known it in the way he ought to know. 3But if anyone loves God, this person is known by Him. 4So, concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that “an idol is nothing in the world” and that “there is no God but one.” 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— 6yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
Consideration for the Weak
7However, not everyone has this knowledge. Some, through their long-standing habituation to idols, still eat this food as if it were a real sacrifice to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8Now food will not bring us close to God; we are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. 9but take care that this “right” of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if someone sees you—the one who has “knowledge”—dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, since he is weak, be “built up” into eating food sacrificed to idols? 11For the weak person is being destroyed by your “knowledge”—the brother or sister for whom Christ died! 12In this way, by sinning against your brothers and sisters and wounding their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ. 13Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I may not cause my brother to stumble.
