1Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to touch a woman.”
2But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife and each woman her own husband.
3The husband must fulfill his obligation to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.
4The wife does not have authority over her own body, but her husband does; and likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but his wife does.
5Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by mutual agreement for a set time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer and then come together again, so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
6I say this as a concession, not as a command.
7I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.

Guidance for the Unmarried and the Widowed

8
Λέγω
δὲ
τοῖς
ἀγάμοις
καὶ
ταῖς
χήραις,
καλὸν
αὐτοῖς
ἐὰν
μείνωσιν
ὡς
κἀγώ·
9
εἰ
δὲ
οὐκ
ἐγκρατεύονται,
γαμησάτωσαν,
κρεῖττον
γάρ
ἐστιν
γαμῆσαι
ἢ
πυροῦσθαι.
10
Τοῖς
δὲ
γεγαμηκόσιν
παραγγέλλω,
οὐκ
ἐγὼ
ἀλλὰ
ὁ
κύριος,
γυναῖκα
ἀπὸ
ἀνδρὸς
μὴ
χωρισθῆναι,
11
—ἐὰν

χωρισθῇ,

ἄγαμος
ἢ
τῷ
ἀνδρὶ
καταλλαγήτω,—
καὶ
ἄνδρα
γυναῖκα
μὴ
ἀφιέναι.

8I say to the unmarried and the widows: it is good for them if they remain as I am.
9But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10To those who are married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): a wife should not separate from her husband—
11but if she does separate, let her remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband—and a husband should not divorce his wife.

Τοῖς

14

15
εἰ

οὐ

τοιούτοις·
ἐν

16
τί

εἰ
τὸν
ἄνδρα
σώσεις;
ἢ
τί
οἶδας,
ἄνερ,
εἰ
τὴν
γυναῖκα
σώσεις;
|
|
12To the rest I say (I, not the Lord): If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.
13And if any woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce her husband.
14For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through the brother. Otherwise, your children would be “unclean,” but as it is, they are holy.
15But if the unbeliever separates, let them separate. In such cases the brother or the sister is not enslaved; God has called you to peace.
16For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

17Only let each person live the life that the Lord has assigned to him, just as God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.
18Was anyone already circumcised when he was called? He should not try to undo it. Was anyone uncircumcised when he was called? He should not get circumcised.
19Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing; what matters is keeping God’s commandments.
20Let each person remain in the condition in which he was called.
21Were you a slave when you were called? Do not let it trouble you—but if you are indeed able to become free, rather make use of the opportunity.
22For he who was called in the Lord as a slave is the Lord’s freedman; likewise, he who was called as a free man is Christ’s slave.
23You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of human beings.
24Brothers and sisters, let each person remain with God in the state in which he was called.

25 Now concerning virgins, I have no command from the Lord, but I give my opinion as one who, by the Lord’s mercy, is trustworthy.
26I think, then, that this is good because of the present distress: that it is good for a person to remain as they are.
27Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife.
28But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such people will have trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you.

36If anyone thinks he is acting improperly toward his virgin, if she is past her bloom and it ought to be so, let him do what he wishes; he does not sin. Let them marry.
37But the one who stands firm in his heart, being under no necessity but having authority over his own will, and has decided this in his own heart—to keep her as a virgin—he will do well.
38So then, both the one who gives his virgin in marriage does well, and the one who does not give her in marriage will do better.
