Chapter 9
Paul’s Rights as an Apostle
1Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you yourselves not my work in the Lord? 2Even if to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 Ἡ ἐμὴ ἀπολογία τοῖς ἐμὲ ἀνακρίνουσίν ἐστιν αὕτη. 4 μὴ οὐκ ἔχομεν ἐξουσίαν φαγεῖν καὶ πεῖν; 5 μὴ οὐκ ἔχομεν ἐξουσίαν ἀδελφὴν γυναῖκα περιάγειν ὡς καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ ἀπόστολοι καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ τοῦ κυρίου καὶ Κηφᾶς; 6 ἢ μόνος ἐγὼ καὶ Βαρναβᾶς οὐκ ἔχομεν ἐξουσίαν μὴ ἐργάζεσθαι; 7 Τίς στρατεύεται ἰδίοις ὀψωνίοις ποτέ; τίς φυτεύει ἀμπελῶνα καὶ τὸν καρπὸν αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐσθίει; ἢ τίς ποιμαίνει ποίμνην καὶ ἐκ τοῦ γάλακτος τῆς ποίμνης οὐκ ἐσθίει; 8 Μὴ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον ταῦτα λαλῶ ἢ καὶ ὁ νόμος ταῦτα οὐ λέγει; 9 ἐν γὰρ τῷ Μωϋσέως νόμῳ γέγραπται, Οὐ κημώσεις βοῦν ἀλοῶντα. {Deut 25:4} μὴ τῶν βοῶν μέλει τῷ θεῷ 10 ἢ δι' ἡμᾶς πάντως λέγει; δι' ἡμᾶς γὰρ ἐγράφη ὅτι ὀφείλει ἐπ' ἐλπίδι ὁ ἀροτριῶν ἀροτριᾶν καὶ ὁ ἀλοῶν ἐπ' ἐλπίδι τοῦ μετέχειν. 11 εἰ ἡμεῖς ὑμῖν τὰ πνευματικὰ ἐσπείραμεν, μέγα εἰ ἡμεῖς ὑμῶν τὰ σαρκικὰ θερίσομεν; 12 Εἰ ἄλλοι τῆς ὑμῶν ἐξουσίας μετέχουσιν, οὐ μᾶλλον ἡμεῖς;
3My defense to those who would examine me is this: 4Do we not have the right to eat and drink? 5Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife, as do the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? 6Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? 7Who ever serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Or who shepherds a flock and does not partake of the milk from the flock? 8Am I saying these things from a merely human perspective? Does the Law not say the same? 9For in the Law of Moses it is written: “You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” {Deut 25:4} Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10Or does He say it entirely for our sake? Yes, it was written for our sake, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher ought to thresh in hope of sharing the crop. 11If we sowed spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12If others share in this right over you, do we not have it even more?
Giving Up Rights for the Gospel
But we have not used this right. Instead, we endure all things so that we may not place any obstacle in the way of the Gospel of Christ. 13Do you not know that those who perform the temple duties eat the food from the temple, and those who attend to the altar share in the altar’s offerings? 14In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the Gospel should get their living from the Gospel. 15But I have used none of these things. And I am not writing this so that such a thing might happen in my case. I would rather die than—no one will nullify my boast! 16For if I preach the Gospel, that gives me no reason to boast; for necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may offer the Gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the Gospel.
To All Things, All People
19For though I am free from all, I have enslaved myself to all, so that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the Law I became as one under the Law (though I myself am not under the Law), so that I might win those under the Law. 21To those without the Law I became as one without the Law (though I am not without God’s law but am within Christ’s law), so that I might win those without the Law. 22To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the Gospel, so that I may become a fellow-sharer in it.
The Athlete’s Discipline
24Do you not know that in a stadium the runners all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may seize it. 25Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a crown that perishes, but we an imperishable one. 26Therefore I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one hitting the air. 27Instead, I treat my body roughly and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others, I myself might not be disqualified.
