Chapter 5
Faith as Victory
1 Πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός, ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ γεγέννηται, καὶ πᾶς ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὸν γεννήσαντα ἀγαπᾷ [καὶ] τὸν γεγεννημένον ἐξ αὐτοῦ. 2 ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἀγαπῶμεν τὰ τέκνα τοῦ θεοῦ, ὅταν τὸν θεὸν ἀγαπῶμεν καὶ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ ποιῶμεν. 3 αὕτη γάρ ἐστιν ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν, καὶ αἱ ἐντολαὶ αὐτοῦ βαρεῖαι οὐκ εἰσίν. 4 ὅτι πᾶν τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ νικᾷ τὸν κόσμον· καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ νίκη ἡ νικήσασα τὸν κόσμον, ἡ πίστις ἡμῶν. 5 τίς [δὲ] ἐστιν ὁ νικῶν τὸν κόσμον εἰ μὴ ὁ πιστεύων ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ;
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the one born of Him as well. 2By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and practice His commandments. 3For this is the love of God—that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not a heavy burden. 4For whatever has been born of God conquers the world; and this is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. 5Who is the one who conquers the world if not the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
The Threefold Witness
6This is the One who came through water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only, but by the water and by the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7For there are three who testify: 8the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three are in agreement. 9If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God which He has testified concerning His Son. 10The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in himself. The one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has testified concerning His Son. 11And this is the testimony: that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12The one who has the Son has life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Assurance and the Sin Leading to Death
13I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14And this is the confidence we have toward Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests we have asked of Him.
16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead to death, he shall ask, and He will give life to him—to those committing sins not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I am not saying that he should pray about that. 17All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death.
Final Certainties
18We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but the One who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. 19We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know the True One; and we are in the True One, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
