Chapter 3
Experience Versus Law
1 Ὦ ἀνόητοι Γαλάται, τίς ὑμᾶς ἐβάσκανεν, οἷς κατ' ὀφθαλμοὺς Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς προεγράφη ἐσταυρωμένος; 2 τοῦτο μόνον θέλω μαθεῖν ἀφ' ὑμῶν· ἐξ ἔργων νόμου τὸ πνεῦμα ἐλάβετε ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως; 3 οὕτως ἀνόητοί ἐστε, ἐναρξάμενοι πνεύματι νῦν σαρκὶ ἐπιτελεῖσθε; 4 τοσαῦτα ἐπάθετε εἰκῇ; εἴ γε καὶ εἰκῇ. 5 ὁ οὖν ἐπιχορηγῶν ὑμῖν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἐνεργῶν δυνάμεις ἐν ὑμῖν, ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως; 6 καθὼς Ἀβραὰμ ἐπίστευσεν τῷ θεῷ, καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην· {Gen 15:6}
1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes, Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2I want to learn only this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it really was in vain? 5Does the one who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6Just as “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” {Gen 15:6}
The Curse and the Promise
7Understand, then, that those who are of faith—these are the sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.” {Gen 12:3} 9So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the believer.
10 ὅσοι γὰρ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου εἰσίν, ὑπὸ κατάραν εἰσίν· γέγραπται γὰρ ὅτι Ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὃς οὐκ ἐμμένει πᾶσιν τοῖς γεγραμμένοις ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτά. {Deut 27:26} 11 ὅτι δὲ ἐν νόμῳ οὐδεὶς δικαιοῦται παρὰ τῷ θεῷ δῆλον, ὅτι Ὁ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται· {Hab 2:4} 12 ὁ δὲ νόμος οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ πίστεως, ἀλλ' Ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς. {Lev 18:5}
10For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not remain in all the things written in the book of the law, to do them.” {Deut 27:26} 11Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, because “The righteous shall live by faith.” {Hab 2:4} 12But the law is not of faith; rather, “The one who does these things shall live by them.” {Lev 18:5}
13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” {Deut 21:23} 14so that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
The Priority of the Promise
15Brothers, I am speaking in human terms: even a person’s covenant, once it has been ratified, no one sets aside or adds conditions to it. 16now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his “offspring.” It does not say, “and to offsprings,” as referring to many, but as referring to one: “and to your offspring,” {Gen 12:7} who is Christ. 17What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not revoke a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has freely granted it to Abraham through a promise.
The Purpose of the Law
19Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made; and it was delivered through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20Now a mediator is not for just one party, but God is one.
21Is the Law then contrary to the promises [of God]? May it never be! For if a law had been given that was able to impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law. 22But the Scripture has locked up all things under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
From Guardian to Sonship
23Now before faith came, we were being guarded under the Law, locked up until the faith that was about to be revealed. 24So then, the Law became our paidagōgos until Christ, so that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a paidagōgos.
26For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no “male and female”; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.
