Chapter 2
The Council at Jerusalem
1Then after fourteen years, I went up to Jerusalem again with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. 2I went up because of a revelation and presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles—though I did so privately to those of reputation—to make sure I was not running, or had not run, in vain. 3But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
4This issue arose because of the false brothers who were smuggled in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might enslave us. 5To them we did not yield in submission for even a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.
Recognition by the Pillars
6But from those who were influential (what they once were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those of reputation contributed nothing to me. 7On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been for the circumcised. 8For the one who worked in Peter for an apostleship to the circumcised also worked in me for the Gentiles.
9And when they recognized the grace given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10They only asked that we should remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
The Confrontation at Antioch
11 Ὅτε δὲ ἦλθεν Κηφᾶς εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν, κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτῷ ἀντέστην, ὅτι κατεγνωσμένος ἦν. 12 πρὸ τοῦ γὰρ ἐλθεῖν τινας ἀπὸ Ἰακώβου μετὰ τῶν ἐθνῶν συνήσθιεν· ὅτε δὲ ἦλθον, ὑπέστελλεν καὶ ἀφώριζεν ἑαυτὸν φοβούμενος τοὺς ἐκ περιτομῆς. 13 καὶ συνυπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ [καὶ] οἱ λοιποὶ Ἰουδαῖοι, ὥστε καὶ Βαρναβᾶς συναπήχθη αὐτῶν τῇ ὑποκρίσει. 14 ἀλλ' ὅτε εἶδον ὅτι οὐκ ὀρθοποδοῦσιν πρὸς τὴν ἀλήθειαν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου, εἶπον τῷ Κηφᾷ ἔμπροσθεν πάντων, Εἰ σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ὑπάρχων ἐθνικῶς καὶ οὐχὶ Ἰουδαϊκῶς ζῇς, πῶς τὰ ἔθνη ἀναγκάζεις Ἰουδαΐζειν;
11But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12For before certain people came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they arrived, he began to withdraw and separate himself, because he was afraid of those from the circumcision party. 13And the rest of the Jews joined him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14But when I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of everyone: “If you, being a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
Justification by Faith Alone
15We are Jews by nature and not “Gentile sinners”; 16yet knowing that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no flesh will be justified. 17But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were also found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? May it never be! 18For if I rebuild the very things I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor.
19For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; 20and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. 21I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
