Chapter 5
Qualifications for High Priesthood
| 1For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, so that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and the wayward, since he himself is also clothed in weakness; 3and because of this, he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins for himself, just as he does for the people. 4And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. |
Christ’s Appointment and Agony
|
5So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become a high priest, but was appointed by the One who said to Him:
“You are My Son,
6just as He says in another place:
today I have begotten You”; {Psalm 2:7}
“You are a priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek.” {Psalm 110:4} |
| 7In the days of His flesh, He offered up both petitions and entreaties with loud crying and tears to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission. 8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered; 9and having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10having been designated by God as high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. |
Spiritual Immaturity
| 11Concerning this we have much to say, and it is difficult to explain since you have become dull in your hearing. 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you again have need for someone to teach you the basic elements of the beginning of the oracles of God, and you have come to have need of milk and not solid food. 13For everyone who lives on milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14But solid food is for the mature, for those who through practice have their senses trained to distinguish between good and evil. |
