Chapter 6
Moving Toward Maturity
1Therefore, leaving behind the elementary teaching about Christ, let us be carried along toward maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith in God, 2of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And this we will do, if indeed God permits.
The Peril of Falling Away
4For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become sharers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again for themselves the Son of God and holding Him up to public contempt.
7For ground that drinks the rain that often falls upon it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. 8But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and close to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.
Confidence in God’s Faithfulness
9But concerning you, beloved, we are convinced of better things—things that belong to salvation—even though we speak in this way. 10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you demonstrated toward His name, having served the saints and continuing to serve them. 11And we desire each one of you to demonstrate the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you do not become sluggish, but instead become imitators of those who through faith and patient endurance inherit the promises.
The Certainty of God’s Promise
13For when God made a promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater to swear by, He swore by Himself, {Gen. 22:16} 14saying: “Surely I will greatly bless you and I will greatly multiply you.” {Gen. 22:17} 15And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham obtained the promise. 16For people swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath serves as a confirmation that puts an end to all dispute.
17In the same way, because God wanted to demonstrate even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable nature of His purpose, He guaranteed it with an oath. 18This was so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. 19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, both secure and firm, reaching into the inner place behind the curtain, 20where Jesus has entered as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
