Chapter 14
Dealing with the Weak and the Strong
1Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on their opinions. 2One person has faith to eat all things, but the one who is weak eats only vegetables. 3The one who eats must not look down on the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat must not judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him. 4Who are you to judge someone else’s household servant? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will be made to stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5One person judges one day to be more important than another, while another judges every day to be alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. 6The one who observes the day, observes it for the Lord. The one who eats, eats for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat, for the Lord he does not eat, and he too gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8For if we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or whether we die, we belong to the Lord. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again: so that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living. 10But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11For it is written:
  “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall give praise to God.
” {Isaiah 49:18}
12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
13Therefore, let us no longer judge one another. Instead, judge this: not to place a stumbling block or a snare in a brother’s way. 14I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is “unclean” in itself; but to the one who considers something to be unclean, to that person it is unclean. 15For if your brother is being grieved because of food, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not, by your food, destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16Therefore, do not let what is a “good” for you be spoken of as evil. 17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18For the one who serves Christ in this way is well-pleasing to God and approved by people. 19So then, let us pursue the things of peace and the things that build up one another. 20Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things are clean, but it is an evil thing for the person who eats in a way that causes a stumble. 21It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. 22The faith that you have, keep to yourself before God. Blessed is the one who does not judge himself by what he approves. 23But the one who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because it is not from faith; and everything that is not from faith is sin.
