The Suffering Servant

1 Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of Yahweh revealed?

1 κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν;
καὶ βραχίων κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη;
1 κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσε τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν;
καὶ βραχίων Κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη;
1 Oh Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
1 Oh Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he has no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

2 We reported before him like a child, like a root in a thirsty land; he has no form or glory, and we saw him, and he had no form or beauty. 2 We reported before him like a child, like a root in a thirsty land; he has no form or glory, and we saw him, and he had no form or beauty.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

3 But his appearance was dishonoured, forsaken beyond all men, a man being in a wound and knowing how to bear sickness; because his face is turned away, he was dishonoured and not regarded. 3 But his appearance was dishonoured, forsaken beyond all men, a man being in a wound and knowing how to bear sickness; because his face is turned away, he was dishonoured and not regarded.

4 Surely he has carried our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

4 This one bears our sins and suffers pain for us, and we accounted him to be in trouble and calamity and harm. 4 This one bears our sins and suffers pain for us, and we accounted him to be in trouble and calamity and harm.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was on him; and with his stripes we are healed.

5 But he was wounded because of our acts of lawlessness and has been sick because of our sins; the chastening of our peace was on him; by his bruise we were healed. 5 But he was wounded because of our acts of lawlessness and has been sick because of our sins; the chastening of our peace was on him; by his bruise we were healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; a man has strayed in his own way, and the Lord gave him over to our sins. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; a man has strayed in his own way, and the Lord gave him over to our sins.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he doesn’t open his mouth.

7 And he, because he has been mistreated, doesn’t open his mouth; like a sheep he was led to a slaughter, and as a lamb is silent before the one shearing it, so he doesn’t open his mouth. 7 And he, because he has been mistreated, doesn’t open his mouth; like a sheep he was led to a slaughter, and as a lamb is silent before the one shearing it, so he doesn’t open his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

8 ἐν τῇ ταπεινώσει κρίσις αὐτοῦ ἤρθη· τὴν γενεὰν αὐτοῦ τίς διηγήσεται;
8 ἐν τῇ ταπεινώσει κρίσις αὐτοῦ ἤρθη· τὴν δὲ γενεὰν αὐτοῦ τίς διηγήσεται;
8 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away.
Who will describe his generation?
Because his life is being taken from the ground, he was led to death on account of the acts of lawlessness of my people.
8 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away.
Who will describe his generation?
Because his life is being taken from the ground, he was led to death on account of the acts of lawlessness of my people.

9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

9 And I will give the wicked for his burial and the rich for his death, because he committed no lawlessness, nor was deceit found in his mouth. 9 And I will give the wicked for his burial and the rich for his death, because he committed no lawlessness, nor was deceit found in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise him; he has put him to grief: when you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Yahweh shall prosper in his hand.

10 And the Lord wants to cleanse him from his calamity.
If you offer for sin, your soul shall see a long-lived offspring.
And the Lord wants to take away
10 And the Lord wants to cleanse him from his calamity.
If you offer for sin, your soul shall see a long-lived offspring.
And the Lord wants to take away

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

11 from the pain of his soul, to show him light and shape him with understanding, to justify a righteous one who is a good servant to many, and he himself shall bear their sins. 11 from the pain of his soul, to show him light and shape him with understanding, to justify a righteous one who is a good servant to many, and he himself shall bear their sins.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he has poured out his soul to death; and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he carried the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

12 Therefore he shall inherit many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong, because his soul was given over to death, and he was counted among the lawless, and he carried the sins of many, and because of their sins he was betrayed. 12 Therefore he shall inherit many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong, because his soul was given over to death, and he was counted among the lawless, and he carried the sins of many, and because of their sins he was betrayed.
